View Full Version : ventolin when pregnant? dumb q i know
can i use ventolin and flixotide(asthma preventer) when pregnant? im pretty sure i can just wanted to double check
The ventolin is definatly fine...not sure about the other one tho. When I was preg with DS they changed the preventer I was on coz it wasn't safe when preg, but I can't remember what I had or what it was changed to. Being preg seemed to cure my asthma :D I don't use a preventer at all anymore and only use ventolin occasionally, like if I have a cold or hayfever.

My friend and I have both had to use ventolin during pg which is fine but she had to change to Flixotide Junior (the kids one). My asthma has never got that bad.
I continued to use both ventolin and seretide - next to nothing transfers from you to the baby. Ask your carer for a more scientific/knowledgable answer - they will give you a brochure (i was given one).
The ventolin is definately okay. Im not sure about flixotide, but my OB prescribed me Pulmicort which is also a preventer.
Best to check with the doctor if your unsure. Hope it doesnt cause too much trouble though your pregnancy.:hugs:
The preventer you are on should be fine. It would be far more dangerous tostop and get a really nasty attack then to keep up with regular check-ups and medication
There is lots of information on this site
http://www.nationalasthma.org.au/html/management/spec_topics/st006_preg.asp
or you can ring the asthma Foundation in your state or the Antional Asthma Hotline for information:
"The Asthma Information Line is a telephone service available during business hours that is staffed by trained asthma advisers. You can access the Information Line by telephoning 1800 645 130 (free call). "

This is exactly what my GP told me when I was pg. As everyone else has said, ventolin is fine. I used to take Seretide, which is a combination of Serevent and Flixotide. So Flixotide on it's own is fine. Definitely check with you GP though.

Just thought I'd add I have been prescribed some ventolin - i am 27 weeks. My dr showed me it is what they call a class a drug; (like amoxillin sp) proven to be safe in pregnancy, but it does have a 'relaxant' effect on the uterus - if you are close to due it could delay labour.

My dr told me i was still able to use my ventolin while pregnant & i could also use my seretide that i also take!
I would just double check with him but i think he would have told you not to take it if you werent allowed (assuming that its your usual dr)
