Matilda has been diagnosed with a very sore red throat (on top of teething) and the Doc has prescribed her some Amoxil to clear it up, and also panadol to keep her temp under control and for some of the pain. She was fine most of the day with drinking and managed to have some soup for dinner, but since then its gone down hill.

The poor thing gets so upset when she has to swallow, that most of the time she is just dribbling it all out her mouth. She has had a bad sore throat once before to the point it had ulcers in it and this didnt appear to be that bad, yet she wont even drink breastmilk, she tries to then just screams cause she is in so much pain.

The only thing she will have is ice cubes, which is fine, but she is so tired as well. Ive just managed to get her to crash on the floor in the bedroom with a pillow watching the wiggles but she still keeps stirring to cry when she swallows.

Is there anything else I can do for her? Any suggestions or advice? Its going to be a very long night me thinks.

Ohhhhh the poor little thing!

I had a really bad sore throat once, and I got these lozenges that numbed my throat. She's prob too little for lozenges, but maybe there is a baby-friendly version.

Other than that I don't know. Poor little chickie :crying:

It's probably a bit late at night now, but you can get Gastrolyte in icypole form. It will help her throat and keep her hydrated.

I hope she feels better soon.

We had a horrible night, Matilda was napping and when she woke she screamed and cried and was so upset, we basically watched wiggles all night with the odd ice cube being eaten. About 1.30 she slept for about an hr but then nothing again until about 5 am this morning, she basically passed out on my chest on the lounge for about 2.5 hrs. I felt so so so bad for her. Its been tough trying to get her to take medicine, she just spits it out cause she doesnt want to swallow anything cause it hurts. I managed to her to have a chuppa chupa this morning, not that nutritional but she needed something in her system. She also managed a few mouth fuls of yoghurt. I gave in and we went and bought some nurofen, I just gave her some, well tried to, I think she only really swallowed about half if Im lucky, but hopefully it will help, She also just ate a good lot of watermelon. I just cut it very small.

The poor darling:( I hope she gets better really soon.
I would just keep up with the ice cubes and the pain relief.

:hugs::hugs: for both of you.

I think if she is in that much pain I wouldn't think twice about giving her pain relief, it sounds like she desperately needs it.

When my DD had a similar thing at 18 months I was told to get her some Painstop at the chemist - it's stronger than Nurofen because Nurofen and Panadol for her weren't doing anything at all, it was that bad. She actually ended up hospitalised after 10 days from dehydration. I tell you that not to scare you, but to say that no matter what you have to get her to drink. If that means giving her pain relief then don't even think twice about it.

The gastrolyte icypoles are good, if you can't get those I'd give her regular icypoles just to get some fluid into her.

Sounds like you had a really horrid night, I hope tonight is better poor baby girl :( (and poor mum!)

Sounds like you had a rough night. I wouldn't worry too much about getting food into her, just fluids. It's important that she not dehydrate. She can live without food for a lot longer.

I hope you both have a better day and night tonight.

Yep Painstop i recommend. Or if she is too young for painstop go nurofen. DS has had tonsillitis a few times and its really horrible for them. Also iceblocks, lots of cold drinks...hope she gets better soon!

My DD gets tonsilitis all the time (this year she has had it 5 times) and when she goes off her food and drink i give her softdrink to sip on. It is really cold on the throat. My doctor suggested it. I figure whatever fluids i can get her to drink, i will. I know that when i have a really sore throat, i love a glass of soft drink.

:hugs: Hope she gets better soon. Hopefully the amoxil should be working by now.

Growing up I had a bout of tonsilitis about once a month til I was 8. There's nothing worse than a sore throat as basic things like eating, drinking and swallowing hurt so much.

I've never used Painstop but I know a few friends that swear by it. I thought you couldn't take it under 2?? Obviously I'd only use painstop for severe cases of pain like this one, but it sounds like she really needs some sleep (it has pain relief as well as a mild sedative for sleeping). Poor darlin' to her
