DD's first birthday is coming up in December and I want to make her one of those cakes that have a doll in the top and the dress is cake.
Has anyone made one of these before?? I'd love to see some pictures and also how you made it.
My mum has one of the Womans Weekly Kids Party Cake books but its about 25 years old  so the cakes are a bit fugly!
Is it worth getting a new version of the book?
Any help would be great!!!

I have both the new ones and i think they are worth getting:yes:. If you plan on making her cake every year then i would buy them. I haven't made one but they usually aren't that hard to do.

Its defo worth getting the new book - the cakes are awesome, and the instructions are easy to follow :)

My Mum makes all the kidlets birthdays cakes and it's worth getting the books.
There is a really nice one in the new book it has a big ladybug on the front cover
Have you had a look in the birthday cake thread?

I made 2!!! One for her actual b'day & one for her party...
I did a thread exactly the same, earlier in the year!!!
You need a Dolly Varden Tin (hire, or buy)- any favorite cake mix...
I reccommend a cake board so you can easily deal with candles... I stuck them down with play doh
I have a book - I have not really used it though... I just google 'kids b'day cakes'

Tingles, those cakes look great! Was it hard to get the doll in the top??
I did start looking through the cake thread, but there were too many pages  I'll have a proper look now!
I might get one of the new cake books
very easy, that's why I bothered to make 2...
This is what I did...:chef:
just take a largish pointy sharp knife & cut a small deepish square... then I thought you would have to scoop the cake out of the centre - BUT NO!!! I just pushed the dolly in, and it pushes the 'square' piece down...
Another easy alternative to making kiddies cakes is the round edible character images

I remember having a dolly cake when i was little. They look great. I was making one for Dd for her 4th birthday (2nd Oct) but she decided that she wanted a pink dinosaur cake instead.I must say that it turned out great:yes: (if I do say so myself). When making the dolly cake, before you push the doll into it,wrap the legs together in glad wrap and this will make your job a lot easier  . Just a little tip. Enjoy the cake decorating!!

Thanks for the tip luvbnamum! I probably would have ended up with legs out either side of the cake
that reminds me... I took the legs off... every1 has their own ideas!
i had one when i was little and i pulled the doll out and was horrified that mum had cut its legs off  i cried and cried coz the doll had no legs.

That's probably another way to go.I just figure that by leaving the legs on the little birthday girl also gets a 'bonus toy'.

Thats what I was thinking  A really pretty Barbie or something that she'll be able to play with. Once mummy's licked all the icing off of course

MMMM....icing:yes:  And don't forget that being the chef:chef: it's our duty to do a lot of tasting while we are cooking and icing the cake....just to make sure it's perfect for our little ones,of course;)

The legs snap on and off easily, or wrap in gladwrap.... even slide it into a paper towel cylinder...
Ha ha although this wont help you with your cake making ventures, when my sister was about 4 my Mum made her a Dolly Varden cake, and covered the skirt in alternating white and pink marshmallows (just like the WW cookbook said to do- on another tangent I used to LOVE browsing through that book growing up!) anyway, because my sister was the birthday girl, she took it upon herself to sneak into the party room while everyone else was out having fun and eat all the marshmallows.
About 30 minutes later, she threw them back up again.
Ahh, nostalgia at it's finest.
BTW maybe don't cover your cake in marshmallows!

luvbnamum - Yes, I think there'll be lots of "practise" cakes!
Nomsie - My mum has the WW book with the marshmellow dress! And I used to loooove going through it when I was little too! Don't worry, I won't be using them though :barf: hahahaha!
