View Full Version : DD has 'virus' & won't eat!
Morning all!
I really need some suggestions from you. My dd (18months) has been off her food going on 6 days now. Yesterday I took her to the dr's and he couldn't find anything wrong so he put it down to a virus which she just has to get over herself.
Meanwhile, it's now going on to day 6 and I can't get her to eat a thing!! I've managed to get about 2 spoons of yoghurt into her yesterday afternoon and that's the only thing I have been able to feed her for he last 4 days! I try her on milk also and I'd be lucky if she can drink 100mls! I try to just keep her fluids up but even getting her to drink water is a fight. I've tried everything from arrowroot biccies to just plain rice, banana, toast or just plain bread and she still refuses to eat! I need some suggestions on what to feed her. I think 6 days is getting a bit much for her without food and I don't know what to do!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Have you tried Jelly? My DD loved that when she was unwell and at least its something in her tummy?
Hope she is on the mend soon

Jelly is a great idea, just to get something into her belly as its hard to start eating again when they've gone a few days.
What about baby custards? This worked for me when I was about 5, had an infection and went 2 weeks eating pretty much nothing and just the smell of food would make me sick, but once started having a little something in the belly - within a few days had the urge to want to eat again.
Hope she gets better soon.
I've never tried her on jelly! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give that a go!! I've tried custard and that's a big no no I'm afraid!
Jelly is a wonderfuly invention LOL!
Dont stress too much about the not eating, as long as they are still getting fluids into them, it'll be OK, the appetite will return in no time. DS was like that at 10 months when he had gastro, I was so worried he would starve.
When they start rejecting fluids as well, then you need to worry.
Try the Electrolyte ice blocks (can buy from chemist) to keep her hydrated.
I know how you are feeling. My daughter is very ill right now aswell-she eats a teaspoon of food at night and licks the vegemite off her toast in the morning, and thats it :-( She is drinking water though, so I am just trying to keep her as hydrated as possible- she will eat when she feels like it. I have been keeping crackers and snacks around so that she can help herself if she feels like having a bite. (She is 1)
I've never tried her on jelly! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give that a go!! I've tried custard and that's a big no no I'm afraid!
Just thought i would tell you there is a jelly called Bambino Jelly Cups it sets in 15mins and comes in lots of flavours and uses natural colours and stuff, Its just quicker than regular jelly which takes ages to set.
Good LUck

Have you tried watermelon? Icy poles?
If she starts refusing liquids you might need to take her to see someone so she doesnt get dehadrated. Good Luck, i know its horrible thing to go through. Just keep offering her different things.
Thank you all so much for your advice!!!
I've tried the electrolye that you stir into a drink jbut that gets spat out. Haven't thought of the iceblocks. Will have a look for them today! Icy poles might be worth a try too! Thanks!
I'm glad I've got you all here to help me out! :hugs: My poor little dd is having a rough time of it lately! She's just got over tonsilitis and chest infection. Was right for a few days and now this....:banghead: It's just one thing after another!
Will concentrate more on keeping her hydrated and try a bit of jelly.
Thanks again!
