i'm currently ttc, but unsure of whether or not to go to the doctor before ttc. is it nesscessary to go or can you just not worry about it?

It's not necessary. But if you have any slightly nagging medical issues it's a nice idea to get them out of the way before you get preg and have an "all systems clear" :) . A general checkup of your weight, blood pressure, pap smear if you'll be due for one soon, breast exam and even an STD screen (obviously depending on your history) can be reassuring. If you don't go before you get preg then your GP or ob will do some of these anyways after you get preg, so it's no big deal. If you do get them done while TTC then they won't be repeated after you're preg.
A trip to the dentist for a check up is also a good idea as once you're preg they may not do some corrective work.

Hi clucky- I think it important to go to the doctor's before TTC you really should have you rubella level's checked because once your PG you can not have a booster done and if you are PG and have low level and catch rubella it can be very bad for your unborn baby even death.
I only found out this when i went for my check up while PG (Unplanned) and my rubella was checked and it was found to be very low sadly i lost the baby and my doctor recommend having a rubella booster before TTC again in which i did.

very important to see the dr before hand i think. I am seeing the dr tomorrow as i want some advice on losing weight before hand. I went a couple of wks ago as well to get advice on wether it is safe for me due to my previous medical condions in preg.
The rubella check is a definete to have checked and the dentist if you haven't been in awhile.

I agree:) - I think a Pre-Conception Check up is very important. There is a check list of things the Doc will check you for when he/she knows you want to concieve and its so much less worriesome if you check out your Ruebella level now before its too late.
Its nice to know that you are heading into pregnancy in top form:)

You could always see a naturopath for Preconception care. They will look at your diet, chemicals in your system, fix hormonal imbalances and test for mineral deficiencies.
Me Personally I Never Went To The Docs Before I Fell Pg. When I Had My Kids They Were Suprises Ecept No 3 !
But I Had My Rubella In School And Taht Was Fine And I Am Reasonably Healthy A Little Un Fit But Workin On That!
Unless U Have Some Medical Conditions Than U Should Go!
People Do Increase There Iron And Folate But I Never Did ! But Do It If U Feel More Better!
Good Luck!
I read recently that the rubella shots you have at school (i had mine in year 7 - im now 30!) only cover you for 7-10 years and then you should get a booster.
I too have been tossing up wether to go - and it was reading this that has made me finally think maybe i should go to the doc befor ttc. I work with the public and have a huge amount of contact with children - ive also noticed at least 10 families of kids coming in (i work in a library) that have chicken pox.
I only had this a year ago, i didnt know i hadnt had it as a child - i thought i was going to die and ended up having 1 month off work.
Its just better to be safe and go now - if you have to put things off for a couple of months, so be it.
I actually wouldnt mind falling pregnant later - wouldnt like to be due at christmas - my df and i (like most couples) spend christmas at alternate parents/families.
This time i would like to stay in a hotel - who else has to sleep in their inlaws loungeroom on a blowup matress with a stinky DOG BLANKET over it. never again.
oh the thought.......

I'd highly recommend buying a few books that deal with pregnancy - Up the Duff by Kaz Cooke is great, and What to expect when you're expecting is an oldie but a goodie.
They'll probably answer a zillion questions that you may have as well as let you know what tests etc you'll need. It's nice to read them whilst you're planning too, after all that's part of the process.

I have these for sale if you're interested. Or check at your local library :)
