Hi all
I need advice. My baby is 4 months old and I have to work out what I am going to put him to bed in over winter as it gets very chillly here in Canberra. I was wondering whether it is worthwhile buying a grobag or whether the sleeping bags with arms keep baby just as warm (and don't cost $85!!!!). Is there anyone out there who also lives in Canberra or a similar climate who uses a grobag? If so, can you tell me what your baby wore underneath the grobag and whether the room was heated etc. The grobag recommendations say to wear a bodysuit with sleeves. Does this mean that there little legs are uncovered under the grobag? If you just use the sleeping bag can you answer the same questions as for the grobag?
Grobag or not to grobag that is the question.
Thanks
Juniors mum.
I am in Melbourne, so we get chilly nights in winter too. I had a sleeping bag with arms for my son, and he wore a wondersuit underneath, so two layers over legs and arms. I made sure I got the sleeping bag without the hood though, as I was paranoid that he would get his face buried in a hood.
We always turn the central heating down to about 17deg overnight as it gets too cold without it, and it's noisy coming on all night if it's higher than this.
With this baby I want to try a grobag if others think they are worth it, but personally, I found the sleeping bag to be fine.
Hi Juniors Mum
I'm in Adelaide and it gets cold here in winter. Last winter when my bub was about 4 months we put her into a grobag. On cold nights she had a vest on, then a bond suit and then grobag 1 tog. We also had a radiator on in her room which has a thermostat. This year I have bought a 2.5 tog grobag as I'd like to do away with the radiator if possible, I worry about the fire risk.
I am selling my 1tog bag if interested. You can also pick up secondhand grobags on the internet. Bumpto3 website also had new bags on sale at very good prices recently and are worth checking out.
I used a "cheapy" bag as my spare.
Grobags are expensive but are good quality and keep their value if you want to sell them later on - I just need to work up the courage to get onto e-bay!
Hope this helps
Hello
I was told that sleeping bags with arms are not recommended because of SIDS.
I got my grobag shipped from the UK from the grobag website (www.grobag.co.uk) - I got 2 bags inc shipping for about $140.00

Hi
This is the dilemma. I have read (and that is why I am soooo paranoid) that you shouldn't overheat a baby as it is a SIDS risk. I understand that in order to reduce the risk, the baby sleeping bags without the arms (doesn't have to be a grobag I suppose) are best. But I also worry that in a Grobag there little arms are exposed which may make them too cold.
I have spoken to other mums who also think that the ones with arms are fine. Maybe I should get both so I can sleep at night and not worry about it!!!

I have used a grobag without any problems, they are definitely worth the money!
If you can get the thicker 2.5tog ones, have your baby wearing a Bonds Wondersuit and the grobag, it's usually enough to keep baby warm all night. Sometimes on the more chilly nights, I would also use a blanket (even though we're not meant to use one when wearing a grobag!):D
