Before I begin, the reason I'm posting here is because I've already sought medical advice (The Hospital...as it was after-hours when she fell ill)...but haven't really gotten any help.

My daughter is 6.5months old and a very happy little girl. On Thursday night I went out with my partner whilst my mother watched our DD. When we came back, she informed me that she thought DD was a little feverish. My mother also informed me that she'd had a bit of diahhrea. I took her temp...it was 37.9 so I decided to just keep an eye on it. An hour later, it was 38.9. I was still concerned, so I called the hospital to see if it was worth me bringing her in. The lady on the end said that she had no idea, and that it was up to me. I decided to give her panadol, a sponge-down and wait another hour.

An hour later, it was 39.5, so I decided I was going to the hospital just to get it checked out (better safe than sorry). We sat around for a while (as you do in public hospitals) and when we got in, her temp was taken...it was 40 degrees. I was a bit freaked out...but none of the staff seemed concerned...they gave her some nurofen and sent me to a room. Her blood pressure was checked, so was her heart-rate...both of which were fine.

They took a urine sample and tested for bladder problems...that was fine. They looked in ears and throat for possible problems. SHE WAS FINE! According to their tests anyway. Her temp went down...and away I was sent.

The next morning she was a bit hot again (38.5 or something) so I gave her some nurofen and a sponge-bath and she was normal again. She wasn't very happy, which she normally is, and spent most of her day sleeping (but it might have just been because she was tired...she didn't get to bed until 4am because we were at the hospital). Later last night she seemed okay though...but still the diahhrea.

Tonight she'd been okay...most of it. She doesn't really want to eat (but IS eating...she's just not very interested in doing it). She's also not really interested in drinking...anything. Not water or milk.

She threw up tonight...which she hasn't done since she was just a few weeks old. It was a HUGE vomit too...it covered the entire lounge chair we were sitting on. She seemed happy afterwards...

I'm just asking for advice...what should I do? Are there home remedies for diahhrea? Do these symptoms mean anything to anything? Should I go to the GP and have HER check out my DD? I just don't like her being sick and want to do whatever I can to make her well...I just don't know what I CAN do!

Hi SassyMummy,
I know exactly how you feel my 10 month old dd was sick the other week there seems to be a virus going around. She woke at six in the morning and seemed to be gagging(dry reaching as they say) and was quite upset.I thought she might have had a bit of wind which she quite often gets. She kept grizzling and didnt seem very well.I took her temp and was ok but i gave her some panadol anyway.About 10 mins later she threw the whole thing up i took her temp again and was about 38.She had a bit of water and some bottle and had a bit of a sleep.I took her to the docs a bit later and her temp was about 39.He said that it was just a virus and no infections were making her sick and she was also getting her top teeth. She seemed heaps better later on and just slept alot and i gave her neurofen also which she seemed to stomach better. There is not anything you can do for viruses medical wise all you can do is keep them hydrated even if is a mouthful of water or an icypole.A temperature is not dangerous and is very rarely resulting in convultions.Neurofen or panadol takes the temp down.Just keep her comfortable and give her lots of hugs and little bits of water at a time do not force her to eat as she will probably bring it up and the water she has drank.
Hope this helps.

Yep, probably a virus, keep count of her wet nappies, ensure she has 3-4 a day. Keep trying to get fluids into her as much as you can. If you need advice call the MCH health line, they are fantastic, 1322 29. A god send when you are worried and new at this baby thing!

Good Luck, Kez

Yep I agree with the other it sounds like a virus and the only thing you can do is keep the fluids up ( hydrolite from the chemist works well) and give panadol and Nurofen to keep the temp down. A high temp althought scarry for us mums is just the bodys way of fighting the infection. If your baby gets dhydrated I would take them back to the hospital

Hi SassyMummy,
How is your dd going? Hope she is getting better. I agree with the virus if i was you and she is still vomiting or has diarhoea(spelling?) tomorrow i would probably take her to the GP just to see what they think. Also i agree with what the mums said about the dehydration i know it is hard but you really need to persever with the fluids approx 10mls every 10mins or 60mls per hour, when my ds had strep throat and was sent to haospital for mild dehydration i found that he took the fluids better if i used a 10ml syringe and squirted it gently in his mouth. Signs to look for would be as was said earlier approx 4-5 wet nappies, if the inside of her mouth feels moist, the fontanelle is not hollow(drooping), eyes not bulging etc. Im sure that you would have noticed by now if she was starting to become dehydrated, just wanted to let you what i was told about the symptoms incase you didn't know. Anyways hope she is feeling better soon.
