Hi,
My little one was admitted to hospital with his first episode of asthma during the week. He is at home now and getting better everyday:)
But he is still on Ventolin every 4-6 hours and I have noticed my already active toddler turn into a very aggressive, emotional mess! Sometimes he is fine but then he will lash out at me or start to cry and become clingy.
Any other mums out there with kids with asthma and are on ventolin?
Have you noticed behaviour changes when your child is on ventolin? and do these settle down once they lower the dose of ventolin?
Thanks
O'smum:)

I have known a lot of people who grew up having to use ventolin, including myself. Unfortunately the agressive behaviour is a side effect but it is better than the alternative. It is the same with cortisone. I think it may have somethign to do with the steriod that would be in both.

I agree, I have experience this from Ventolin and Prednisone when first on it. I got used to it after awhile but its hard to cope with when your a kid. I can remember everything going a hundred miles an hour and you just cant keep up.
Hope it settles down for him and you soon.

Thanks Chelle and Goosie:) Hopefully he wont be a chronic asthmatic  maybe its just a one off ;) or is that just wishful thinking!

I found that when we gave Bella liquid ventolin and prednisone for croup, she tended to be a bit more agitated than before ... still, it settled the symptoms and I gave it to her a couple of years in a row (along with time on the nebuliser each day) until I found a better way to control her problem.
Big hugs for little Orlando ... he (and you!) must have been very frightened ... I'm glad that the meds are working, even if they have a side effect. I hope that it is very short term!

thanks Kyra:)
Oh Sarah,..that is very scary,... how did it start? A cough? Or was he just wheezy???? It seems that littlies with allergies are more prone to asthma,..... did they get him straight onto a nebulizer at the emergency dept?

Hi Jane,
At first I thought it was just his allergies playing up as he had a runny nose, watery eyes and a slight cough (nothing major)
I took him to my GP and she just said he had a chest infection and put him on antibiotics...............but a couple of hours later I could see he was breathing was very heavy, to be honest it wasnt that scary as he wasnt upset or anything.
I took him to emergency and they put him on the nebulizer and thats when O freaked out totally!
They kept him just over 24 hours (the longest of my life LOL)
I am taking him to a natropath next thursday to try some alternate therapies as I really hate what the ventolin is doing to my little guy:(
Hopefully he will be alright:)
Horrid,... I h ad asthma as a baby (it started at 18months),..and Mum said that Ventolin made me bounce off the walls,.. I hope you can find an alternative controller,..let me know how you go?

S, a friends DS is asthmatic and she finds that the ventolin really hypes him up, especially straight after he has taken it - he is almost jumping of the walls, but settles down within a 1/2 hour.
Is O too young to take preventative asthma treatment? Maybe check with your Doc or go and see a specialist.
You will probably find alot of positive things come out of seeing the naturopath, I hope all goes well on Thursday, will be thinking of you!
