Hi

I have my brother staying with his 7 month old baby, Since he has been here baby had cried for probably 14 hours a day. My brother said this is what he has been like for the past month,His wife whom is not here put him on cows milk because she reckons he was going through 3 tins formula a week and a Gp said to. (I dont believe that) But i wondering if its due to the cows milk,(but you couldn't tell her that)his poor little tummy is so hard and when i rock him to relaese wind he constanly fighting me. Do you think i should get my brother to get a second opion or do you think the baby is like this due to parents having spilt at the moment. Your feedback will be much apprecated. Sorry for spelling lack of sleep at the moment.

I would have to say that you should get your brother to get a second opinion, I was told that I should not give Liv cows milk products (cheese, yoghurt, custard) until at least 6 months of age as her body would have trouble breaking down the cows milk & I was also told that it can cause liver or kidney probs but I'm not sure which one or even if this is true but I would definately get that baby back on formula, if cost is a factor there are some cheaper ones on the market, around $10.00 a can & your bro should get some help from FAO to pay for the bubs needs. If your nephew's stomach is hard, its prob because he can't digest the cows milk & is in a lot of pain, please get your bro to give him some formula.
Good luck & let us know how things go.

Thats a lot of formula for a start!! I would go through half that.If he is drinking that much it wouldn't be any cheaper using cows milk:confused:
I would be getting your brother to get him onto baby formula like he should be on until he is 1 year old, still 5 months away, and getting him checked out with a CHN. Heinz formula is only $12 a tin and should be going through just under 3 a fortnight. He should also be starting solids soon to compliment his diet.
Poor little fella!

Is the child constipated due to the milk hardening his stomache? If so i would suggest getting some heinz baby prune juice for the baby to try and well clean him out and then get him straight back on formula, it will prob take awhile for him to settle back down as he sounds like he has a lot of built up wind but the formula should help, there are some babies that don't take to formula though. i think my sister came off it at about 7mnth as she couldn't stand the stuff. definetly back to another dr, maybe a paedatrician

I was always told not to give cows milk until 1yr, i think soy milk is later than that i think it might be 2 years or something and goats milk at 1 as well. The poor little thing. Maybe he should be taken to a gp and get back on that formula.

That poor little baby... I am lactose intolorate and the pain from having dairy is just unbelievable, it no wonder he is screaming so much... Get your brother to get him back to a GP and back on formula...

I always thought that cows milk was not to be given until 12 months, so why a doctor is saying just use it instead of formula beats me... I breastfeed, so I dont know how much formula costs, but for the sake of the baby's health, I wouldn't be worrying about the cost, JMO

Sounds like this poor bub needs to see a doctor :(
I really would push to get your brother to take him to your gp if possible who im sure you know & trust.
Maybe the little thing has something else wrong rather than it being the milk but then they dont get you to hold off for no reason so getting it all checked out would be the best thing for bubs.
Good luck let us know how you go.

Screw the cost and get that baby onto lactose free formula and if your local supermarket doesn't have it, let your fingers do the walking and phone every surrounding supermarket until you find it. That baby should not be given cows milk as the enzymes are too much for their little tummys to digest and will cause severe bloating and pain. The GP who said yes aught to have his licence taken off him:(

Def the kids needs to see a doc.

I would even consider kidnapping him while your DB is in the shower or something  I wouldn't normally think of this, but if you can't get him to let you take the baby to a doc, you've got to do SOMETHING.

If the child is in pain and is on cows milk (contrary to popular belief / opinion) you have to get a second opinion. If the kid was happy as larry, I wouldn't be nearly so concerned, but this child needs help NOW.

Cheers

Thanks Girls

Well I ended up taking Baby to Dr, He ws shocked that he was on Cows milk and that a GP told the parent so (mum of baby not happy with me at the moment but i really don't give a crap), Anyway he was put back on formula, So far so good. No screaming for a long period, Now i just putting it down to he gets carried all day long. Mind you it probably wont last because bub and mum will be together shortly. Well hopefully she realises what damage she is doing to him as printed an article i found on the net for her about giving cows milk to baby under 1.

Again Thanks Girls for the information.
