Before i decide whether i should go and see a Gp about this i thought i would come here and see if i do indeed have Anxiety attacks.

My son was born on the 8th March this year and since he has been home i have been having what i would call mild anxiety attacks.

Basically throughout the day for what seems like no reason at all (no specific trigger i can seem to fathom) i get the heart pounding, feeling like i am about to stop breathing, sweaty, shaky all be it for a few seconds. I know it is coming on and i breath or cough to make it stop.

At night i find myself almost drifting to sleep and then bolting upright in bed racing heart, thinking for a split second i have stopped breathing (i haven't) and gasp for air.

I have never experienced this pre pregnancy, and so is this some kind of anxiety or panic attack, and if so is it common after you have a baby? It's been almost 7 months now since he was born and i have left it alone as i thought maybe just a phase/hormonal or something.

But now it is starting to get on my nerves as i hate hate hate the feeling especially at night.

It has also taken me a lot to post this on here, no idea why.

Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

what you're describing may well be anxiety, but it would be impossible to diagnose over the internet - you really need to be checked out both for anxiety and any possible physical ailments that might be causing your symptoms (ie thyroid problems can cause mood disordered symptoms and are VERY common after childbirth).

It could really be any number of things.

I think first thing I would advise you to do is to make an appointment to see your GP and describe exactly what you described here. Then take it from there.

Good luck, I hope you find an easy answer - but if not, remember that anxiety is a really manageable disorder with the right help! :hugs:

Thanks Tam-i-am i know i should go and see a Gp i guess i just wanted to make sure it was worth seeing one as i don't want to look like a dill or something. If that makes sense. I guess i know i have a problem i just wasn't sure if i was on the right track. I guess being concerned/scared doesn't help.

Thanks for your understanding. :hugs:

Its normal to feel concerned about the GP thinking you're a dill, but in actual fact, GPs don't think that - they're just happy you turn up at all.

If you feel like you might freeze up and not be able to describe to him what's happening, try writing it down for him, even printing off your first post from this thread would be helpful.

I would advise not to wait too long though - you've got the momentum up now, keep it moving. And good luck (and anytime you want a chat, or anything - I'm available by PM :))

Goodluck!!
I to suffer from anxiety at times sometimes i know where it comes from other times out of the blue... talk to your GP they understand, & if they don't find a good one that does.
