View Full Version : Howards National Clean Energy target

Little Johnny has said that he wants to reduce energy usage by 15% by the year 2020. Yet he also wants us to breed breed breed!!!

At the current rate of population increase, this target is FAR from adequate - in fact, we might even go BACKWARDS!

Firstly - is anyone else confused by this extraordinary contradiction?

And Secondly - does anyone else actually vote for the Greens #1?

I always give my preference to greens, but always vote Labor first. I couldn't care less what John boy has to say about climate change...too little, too late. He has had 11 years to care, and surprise, surprise, it becomes an election issue, and John boy is all green.......

What a joke! Im all for going green and reducing energy consumption but come on. Mr Howard seems to forget to mention that most states will not have enough electricity to keep functioning with the standard increases to population past 2010- 2015. Hasnt he read the Owen report into energy in NSW alone and the need to build more electricity producing stations and the costs involved!

Not to mention the increased cost of electricity if 25% of the countries electricity if produced in green methods.

I dont care what anyone says. People do not want to turn off the ducted aircon and spas. People like their mod cons and will go at any lengths to keep them.

How about starting to place solar panels on everyones home roofs and cars at a discounted cost??

This is a great idea.

But no - Mr Howard would prefer to give an extra $6K to people having a third child.

There are lots of ways to reduce energy other than limiting your family.

And I know you're very 'one child' now.... but there's always a chance you'll decide to have another one.. I think most Mums reach that stage when they'd like another baby... and you're not there yet, Jedd's only 4 months. And I don't think that in any way means you care any less about the environment, or would be using more energy.

I dont think of myself as 'very one child'. I'm just very pro-environment and pro-awareness. We probably will have a second child at some point - but the environment is something that we consider before deciding to extend our family.

 Im a little confused. Why should people have to choose between the environment and having more children ??

Children are an asset to this earth, when people start bringing down the importance of them to no more than a drain on our resourses, things get sad. We need more babies, what use is a clean earth without humans, for god's sake it is about education, not naive and simplistic veiws like that. Sorry about the vent but when I hear people talk about babies as 'bad for the enviroment' I can't help but get angry. So wrong!!!!

Exactly, it has no merit what so ever, and lacks thought and substance.

They shouldn't.

Clean renewable energy should be made more accessible so people can have their families at whatever size they want without contributing further to pollution and CO2 emissions.

People really need to be more energy efficient and aware. In the area where I work I see 4 bedroom mansions coming up everyweek with ducted 8 hp aircon pools spas and 3 fridges- and only 2 people living in the house. I even know quite a few who have already made the concious decision not to have children. It really doesnt matter how many people live in the house the consumption in a house with this lifestyle would be similar.

Being energy concious is about being smarter at what we do and more considerate of when and how we do, not reducing the population.

If you even remotely care about the enviroment, you wouldn't vote for Howard. I couldn't think of a stonger description of the word 'contradiction' than that!

Pfft whatever..
I could say things but im not even going to bother..
Not worth risking infraction points.. ;)

Same here..

Its just a ridiculous stereotype someone has decided to post..

I could make some up too regarding what people "are" depending on who they vote for but im not that naive to believe it for one second..

Although i must say i would rather people *think* i dont care about the environment (which is quite funny and extremely untrue) than to think im stupid for supporting Krudd.. ;)

 :p

I agree. I would hate for our parents to have spoken like that.

Also, Australia's population is not growing fast enough. We are an ageing population and the birth rate is slower than the death rate. Who is going to sustain the economy if we don't have children. Who will support health and education?

I am a little suprised that people still don't know about Australia's ageing population problem and the fact that our birth rate is far too slow.

By the way, I am not a liberal supporter. But a lot of his statements recently have been made because of a looming election.

I saw Malcolm Turnbull on Lateline the other night and he was mighty unconvincing re: energy targets. The Libs don't want to commit to 'high targets' and don't want to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, but there was Turnbull being outmanoeuvred by Tony Jones, first defending the Governments targets, then admitting he wants 100% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050 -which is is Mal? You either agree or disagree? By the by, the Government's targets are just absorbing the existing State targets anyway.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/09/24/2041447.htm?site=elections/federal/2007

And Downer doesn't seem to realise/understand that if we don't ratify the Kyoto Protocol, we are barred from voting at the UN Climate Change Summit in Bali - what is this nincompoop doing? He's meant to know these things as our Foreign Affairs Minister!
