View Full Version : Who washes in Cold?
Hi,
Just wondering who washes their nappies in Cold water??
I must admit I have always done a hot wash, but I have seen some discussion about washing in cold.
I remember doing a cold wash once and had to do 3 cycles to get the nappies smelling ok.
So do u wash in cold? If so, how many cycles do you do? And do you use any detergent?
TIA

If its nice weather and my nappies are going to get sun dried I wash in cold.
During winter when they are in the drier or on the clotheshorse I wash in hot.
Not sure why I do this- just vaguely remember someone telling me this is the ok thing to do!
Cool! Im excited now about washing my nappies in cold :smiliedance: Im putting a load on this morning and its nice and sunny today.
Ha, what a weirdo I am, excited about washing!!

I wash on cold.
Very occasionally I wash on hot, if they have been in the bucket for a while or if its raining and I need to hang them inside.
They will last longer washing on cold.

I wash on cold 95% of the time. Just a main wash and rinse, so two cycles, and they never come out smelling icky. I might do a hot wash very occasionally but that's only if the weather is really gloomy, which is very rare where I live.
I was using 2 table spoons of ordinary washing powder until the recent switch to soap nuts. They are BRILLIANT!

ditto.
But if it's been an especially pooey day (refer to the thread Jordan and his shotgun bum (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=123412)) I'll wash in hot... but we have solar hot water, so it doesn't cost me any extra
I use one tablespoon of Trimat Sensitive powder (the one from Aldi) And I do an extra rinse... I don't NEED to.. I just want to avoid build up.

I wash in cold.
I would wash in hot, as my nappies don't get to see the sun (we have no backyard so have to hang them under the house)... but the hot tap is all weird and doesn't connect properly to the hot hose for the machine, and a lot of excess water just ends up going down the drain...
Wow, I had it in my head that everyone washes in hot. Dont know why.. Anyway Im glad I know now. Will save the hot water and $$.

No detergents at all get used on my nappies...ever!
8 minute cold rinse
26 minute cold wash
Line dry
That's all I do! Perfectly smelling, looking, clean nappies everytime!
My understanding is, as long as you line dry, you don't need to hot wash as the sun kills the nasties, not the water.
Also using hot water increases the chances of setting in stains.

I have always done it in cold as well, save on water bill, plus it does the same job, i use nappysan plus a detergent for cold washes and it works, ig there is poo stains still on em normally the sun will get them off.
I wash on cold almost all the time. Occasionally I'll do a hot wash, but this is mostly for the BP covers as I find they are the only things that build up a smell no matter how much line drying they get. About once every 8-10 washes or so will be a hot wash.
I use about 1 dessertspoon of Planet Ark detergent. Normal wash in a front loader; no pre-rinse, no extra rinse at the end.

Napisan is actually not really necessary and can do more harm than good (it'll ruin MCN, plus it can be an irritant to those with sensitive skin). I find my terry flats are still a bright white without having to resort to Napisan. My experience of washing nappies with dd2 has been so much easier than it was with dd1!
OzCloth: Sun vs Sanitiser study (http://www.ozclothnappies.org/info.html#wash)
The above study found that sanitiser came off second best compared to a normal wash and line drying.
I have never washed in hot. (is that bad?)
I dont have hot water connected in my laundry- i always wash in cold and use a formula scoop of powder.
Oh, and they are sun dried.

I did a HOT wash on all my MCN a few weeks ago when TJ had a bad rash and tummy bug, now they have bad stains on them and the Velcro is discoloured.:gloomy:
How do I get the stains out now?? They have been sunned for several days and the suede cloth/ fleece is still greyish. Especially my GK's. :(
I don't mind discoloured nappies, really.:crying:
