View Full Version : How long for a feed?
Hi,
Just wondering how long it takes you to bf your little one .
It's taking me about 1hr most times, sometimes longer if I let him linger. The hour includes one side, nappy change and a bit on other side. Night feeds I can do in 45mins, that's my record.
Is it supposed to get shorter? Feels like I'm bf all day!

mine are anywhere from 45-60 mins.....having said that he just fed from one side quickly and went back to sleep!just when i think i have him figured out he changes lol.....oh and that feed includes both sides and nappy change...sometimes 2 as he is a pooping machine....
All normal! They get more efiicient and are much quicker with their feeds cause they just want to get down and play again. By 3-4 months they usually only take around 20 minutes.
I took half an hr once. Usually takes us 45 min to 1hr though.

WOW!
well i sympathise now... i never got my DD to feed longer than 15 minutes in the begining - actually, maybe never...
But i was worried because everyone told me 'she's just snacking- you sure she's not still hungry - you're making it hard for yourself' (i'm still not sure why it's hard - perhaps coz she feeds a little more often (2-3hrs - now 3-4)- which i do not mind!)
Blah Blah -
your bub will do what it can when it can - if it's not a major biggie for you, et it be. And like others said, he will get stronger and more efficient, and your supply will even out. It's true!
In the meantime - athough it feels like you're in a dark booby munching hole - it will hopefuly be easier within just a few months. Which is hardy any time out of your life as he grows!
it gets better, but i do remember feeling like i fed all day and night! Hangh in there and enjoy the time you get to snuggle cos they stop enjoy that once they get older and like to wriggle!!:)
Guts sometimes only feeds for about 15 mins and then falls asleep so sometimes i'm back in bed within half an hour inc. nappy change. But i've found the amount of time he feeds has no relation to how much he sleeps after! Seems to be completely random at this stage.
And now that he's more interested in everything (6 weeks) he spends a lot of time staring around the room and not much time concentrating on feeding! So meanwhile all my milk is spraying and dripping on me waiting for him to pay attention! :D

night feeds - for us, we can be anywhere from 15 mins - to hour and over, all depends on whether he falls asleep after one boob, is still grunting to get burpies out, not asleep yet, wriggling, nappy change or not...
day feeds - similar, but we look at each other if he is awake, i hold and kiss his hands etc....chat etc...

Seth does this too now, so I put a wrap or something over his head so he can't see around the place. I've found he feeds faster and falls asleep sooner without the distractions.
We can be anywhere from 15mins one boob, not interested in other boob.
Or we can go for friggin hours!!
I let her guide me, she wont eat (reattach) if she's had enough and she will cry if i put her down and she is still hungry.
I too have noticed the length of feed doesnt really impact length of sleep.
Gaps between feeds can be anywhere from the usual 2/3 hours, to 4 hours and then we have booby sessions, which can be on and off for hours.
