I've just got my first delivery of woollen type things - some gorgeous raspberry coloured longies which have been pre-lanolised. Can someone tell me some wool-care basics? How often do I need to wash them and/or lanolise them? Do they honestly, honestly not get wee smelling if they're aired and re-used (soakers I mean - I have some of those coming too)?

They do actually work really well :) Just make sure you hand wash them only, and don't scrub at them - they need to be treated gently when they're wet.

If they get a bit "whiffy", air them, and if they stay smelly then it's time to wash :)

Just be warned - if your bub's anything like mine they'll save their explosive poos for the soaker so you have to wash it all the time! :D

Lanolise about every 6 or so weeks. When they still smell a bit like wee AFTER being aired then it's time to relanolise.

I usually wash and lanolise at the same time. Most woollies are only handwashable, however there are some that can be machine washed on gentle.

As for lanolin, there are a few different options. There is the solid (Lansinoh is the most well known one. It is sold as Breastfeeding nipple cream in chemists), liquid and spray lanolin.

Liquid is my preference. For solid and liquid lanolins:
Fill a tub or bucket with enough lukewarm water to cover woollies. In a small container, dissolve a pea sized amount of solid or liquid lanolin in hot water. Pour over woollies and swish around to cover. Never, ever use hot water directly on woollies as it will cause them to shrink.

Spray lanolin comes in a variety of fragrances, as does some liquid lanolin. I haven't used the spray so I can't give you any directions on how to use it.

HTH :)

eta: best to at least have a couple of woollies, if not more. That way you have a rotation of using one and airing the other. Swap them over the next night.
