Just wondering how many of you were offered/had anasthetic before your amnio??
I was chatting to someone the other day and she said it is routine to give anasthetic before doing an amnio?? (not sure if this is true??)

I had local with mine and I asumed that it was routine.
Mollymoosmum - I didnt either (thankfully now in hindsight - I'm needlephobic!!).
Locals actually sting and would have hurt more than the amnio. Besides, means you have 2 injections as such (no thanks!). I was actually surprised how little the amnio hurt, only bit was when the needle first went in but it wasnt painful as such. The worst part is the uncomfortable sensation you get when they are withdrawing the needle (and apparently you still get that with a local anyway). The only way I can describe it is if you have an "inny" belly button, stick your finger in it and wiggle it around. If you get the funny shooting nerve sensation down your abdomen. that's exactly what it feels like.
I wasn't offered one either-
it was more uncomfortable than painful for me anyway.
I think it was worst for my husband watching this massive needle go in to my tum- he went very quiet

i never had a local with amnio nor offered one, they just told me to watch the screen not the needle going in but i think that it was worse seeing a big needle going near my baby, pain wasnt to bad more fear!

I had a CVS rather than an amnio, and I had a local.
I think that the worst part is when they take the big needle out at the end. *shudder*
