Cut off month for school

A friend of mine who works in daycare told me yesterday that in 2009 they are intending to make the end of January the cut off month for school (in Victoria). So if they don't turn 5 by January they will have to go to school the following year, therefore kids starting 4 year old kinder this year will basically have to repeat 4 year old next year if their 5th birthday is after January 2009. My daughter just makes it, but she will be one of the youngest and I don't think I like that :no: .

Anyone else heard anything about this? What's the cut-off month in your state ATM??

They do that here. You have to be 4 before January 1st. My DD Bella missed out by 27 days, so she goes next year.

Why dont you ring the school that your DD will be going to and ask them? That way you will know if its true or just a rumour.

Hi, I see your in Brissie. The cut of date for Prep is now 30th June. They have to turn 5 by this date to start Prep or 6 by the 30th June to start Grade 1. So if your daughter is a December birthday she will turn 5 the December before she goes to Prep. HTH

lee_77 - I am in Qld too and although DD1 is a fair way off starting prep, i am just wondering about the age too. So do they have to turn 5 the year before they start pre or during the school year that they turn 5???

So DD will turn 5 on the 5 June in 2011. For her to start prep does she have to have already turned 5 in 2010??? Or turning 5 in 2011??? IYKWIM!!! Sorry for the bombardment of q's!

Sara - they have to be 5 before June 30 to start prep that year.
So if she turns 5 in June 2011, she'll start prep in 2011..
My boy turns 5 on the 18th of July 2011 so he won't start until 2012 :(

Yeah, Chanel will turn 5 on July 25th 2010, and therefore can't start until 2011 (this is in QLD). Quite stupid really... I think they should just say "All kids born in 2005 can start in 2010, all kids born in 2006 can start in 2011, etc etc."

Or even just "start when your kid is about 5 or 6, depending on how 'ready' they are for it all."

That's what happened when I started school in 1991 in Victoria. I started the year I was turning 5... but a lot of other kids started the year they were turning 6 because they were more ready then than they were a year earlier.

I think the cut off should be a bit later in the year. Maybe september or november... not smack in the middle.
