View Full Version : Are you more open to RIC if it is done as a part of religious guidelines?

I'm anti-circumcision. I don't agree with it unless there's a medical reason.
Or so I thought.
I was just thinking about Jews and how circumcision is a part of their religion... and realised that, for some reason, I'm not terribly disgusting by this.
So it got me wondering... moreso for those who are anti-circ...do you feel differently about true religious reasons?

i personally don't like circ but like you i feel different if it is for religous reasons. Im not sure why!!! Maybe because it is their beliefs and they have a right???

No I dont think its ok because of religious belief.
I dont think it makes any difference whatsoever.
If I was to think like that, then religion could become an excuse for so many things.

I am really not sure, I don't understand the jewish religion enough, but my first thought is probally no, but I could be easily swayed.

I believe beliefs should be gently instilled into children, not carved into flesh. I don't think imposing personal beliefs, spiritual or otherwise, on a non-consenting minor with a scapel is justifiable...however, I 100% support any adult's right to sacrifice any body part they choose to their God/faith...their body, their choice. Many people who are raised within one belief system choose to follow a different religion as adults; circumcision is amputation, it's incredibly intimate (what's more private than sex organs?), and it's permanent. It's no more appropriate, IMO, than circumcising a little girl for religious reasons, forcing kids to handle snakes to 'prove' their faith, or tattooing "I love Jesus" on your toddler.

I just realised that my OP says "Anti-Caesarean" rather than "circumcision"...lol. I can't edit it on this computer (won't let me use bold or smilies or anything either...), but if a Mod sees this... could you please edit it?

Ummmmm.
I dont feel differently about it. All circumcison upsets me for religion or 'to look like dad'...or whatever. None of them are good reasons for me.
But I feel less qualified to discuss religious circumcision because frankly I dont understand it.
Being Australian and lets face it Australia is culturally barren. Whatever culture we had in the form of indigenous Australians has been destroyed....however I digress...thats a different thread.
Australia is not exactly rich in culture or religion for that matter...I dont understand the importance of religion/cultural rituals....I just dont get it, so I guess I find it harder to argue against iykwim.
In my own heart I know its wrong but I have more respect for it than the 'dad' reason or the 'clean' reason or the 'looks better' reason.
However put that video of the Jewish circ in front of me and I turn into a blubbering mess.
It seems harder to tackle something so steeped in tradition.

THanks xkwzit! :)
And thanks for all of the replies so far!
I will add that I don't like circumcision at all... no matter what reason it's done... but I just seem far less bothered by people doing it for religious reasons.
I'm not religious, but I understand that to those who are big believers, following your religious guidelines must be very important. If I believed strongly in my religion, I suppose I would do whatever it took to make sure I'd end up in "heaven" or whatever other promises my religion is making to me.
I don't know much about any religions - like I said, I'm not interested in religion.... but I dunno, to me the religious reason seems far, far more "valid" a reason than any other non-medical reason... and therefore I just don't have as many objections to it...
Sassymummy I feel the same way as you do. I can't really explain it but it seems more of a reason than any of the other reasons you hear.
I dunno. Its strange. I am not religious either.

I think it's important to remember that many who circumcise for religious reasons aren't actually 'big believers'. Included in those who circumcise for 'religious' reasons are poorly-informed Christians that circumcise because, "Jesus was circumcised." or because it's "...in the Bible". Also, many non-practicing/non-conservative Jews and Muslims continue circumcising for cultural reasons, rather than a strong religious conviction.
If I believed strongly in my religion, I suppose I would do whatever it took to make sure I'd end up in "heaven" or whatever other promises my religion is making to me.
Personally, I draw the line at hurting/cutting parts of my children off. If I believed that only children missing their pinky fingers, tongues, clits, or foreskins went to heaven I'd pass on my knowledge/ideas to my child but I would leave decisions about ritual amputation as a sign of dedication/devotion/belonging up to them as adults.

Me 10 :)
I am against RIC for any reason at all. Religion counts as an "any reason".
I am more sympathetic if a child is circumcised for religious reasons as the parents honestly believe that they are doing it to save the child's immortal soul. However I find that belief rather outmoded and irrelevant in today's society. Other aspects of religion are left behind, why not this?
I can't see why [a] God would create us supposedly in His image only to require that we cut bits off. I can't see what offense a perfectly functioning, needed part of the male anatomy could cause Him.

Religious reasoning or not, circumcision should not be done.
End of story.

No, no ,no! I am not for RIC for ANY reason.
What are they? Ive never heard of this...
An increasing number of Jews are adopting the practise of Bris Shalom: a covenant without cutting.
Many Muslims have also forgone the ritual circumcision as there is no mention of it in the Quran.

Im confused..
So if you are religious you have the right to choose to have your son done..
But if you do not follow a certain religion you do not have the right to choose to have your son done..
I dont get it..
OP - to me no it doesnt make a difference.. I personally choose not to circ my son/s..
If others choose to then thats there choice to make not mine, but either way they are getting it done whether there reason is to look like daddy, cos its cleaner, or due to religion.. None of these reasons are more worthy a reason to getting it done imo..
