Hi,
Hoping someone can tell me at what age can you take your baby into a chlorinated pool / spa  . Would it be a problem with the chemicals? Also I am thinking I would like to take my baby to a swim class - mainly for the social aspect. Any advice would be appreciated.

thank you

My MIL is a swimming instructor, and she has bubs go in their pool from 3 months! Its not chlorinated though, its a very soft salt water.

I think that providing you massage them up afterwards with lots of baby lotion and yummy soft creams then salt water would be okay. I would want to wait a lot longer though if it was chlorine... Poor babies eyes!

I've been taking my bub to swimming lessons since he was 6months. Can't keep him out of the water now!

I did take him for little swims before that but didn't submerge him and rinsed him off thoroughly after. We were living in Darwin and had to go swimming regularly. When this bub comes I figure we won't be swimming till bub is nearly 6months anyway due to the seasons in WA, so will probably start taking into friends pools when around 4-6months. I was more worried about the temp of the water and making sure bub didn't get a chill.

I wouldn't go until after the first immunisations.

After that, I say go for it, as long as you wash baby off before the chlorine dries on the skin.

As you can tell by my avatar i've taken DS swimming and he loved it. As everyone else has written as long as you rinse bubs off after the swim then everything will be fine. I waited until after his first lot shots first, just to be on the safe side

I read somewhere (possibly on here!) after the six month immunisations...

Paige started swimming lessons at 3mths old - the rest of her class were all the same age. It was a chlorinated pool, no problems.:)

They don't go under water all that much at that age. Its all about fun and building their confidence in the water.

We started lessons at 5 1/2 months and with that came free entry to the pol whenever we like.

We go just about every second day for a swim (tuckers Ava out) and take a nice warm shower straigh after and we are doing fine.

Ava suffers with excema so I was worried about that too but all seems to be going well.

I would avoid spas altogther as they can breed some really nasty bugs! I second what everyone else has said about the pools though - great fun! :)

I asked my CHN this at Katelyn's 8 week visit & she said it was fine to start from then as long as the water's not too cold for them and they have a bath after to rinse all the chlorine off.
