I had my first Antenatal check today at Redlands, they seem very nice and organised. I'm not to clued up on the maternity system here in Oz, but was told by the nurse that saw me that shared care is quite popular - so I just agreed to that...is there a better way??

Oh and I have my NT scan there on the 1st October :smiliedance:

NZMEL - Shared care is popular providing your GP bulk bills otherwise it's pricey!

I prefer the BMCS... GP is trained in general practice where as a Midwife is trained specifically in pregnancy, birth and post natal care... I feel more comfortable with them. :yes:

Sorry I should have said more than just Redlands...it's at the Mater Private Hospital - Redland, and yes it is through Queensland X-ray, they warned me that they don't subsidise through medi-care (costing $190) but I rang a few other places on the list I was given and everyone said they don't do the NT scans anymore (they just do normal scans), so I'm not sure what's up with that.

Oh yeah my doctor does bulk bill, but now I wish I knew more about the midwifes...how much do you pay to see them instead??

(Yesterday the nurse confirmed that they will not do the NT scan at the public hospital)

BG holy camoly thats expensive lol. my scan cost me $100 today none back but i did get a cd of it all. and found out they bulk bill 4d scans for around the 20week scan OMG that way it will be easier to find out the sex ..... right??? so im very looking forward to that. and my dates stay the same.

Girls my scan cost me $195 but I get abou $60 back on Medicare ... also all my appointments with my Obs are bulk billed now ... I just have to pay my Obs fee which is ... big breath $4500 !!

But I get 70% of that back on private health ... yikes !!

BG - Make sure you also register for the Medicare Safety Net. Because once you go over your threshold for the Calender year ie: Jan to Dec (which is either $1000 or $500 depending on your situation) Medicare will then pay 80% of anymore gaps. So it always pays to keep all your receipts. I love it because it means I'll be getting my OB for half price :)

Thanks guys, yes I have been reading some of the forums, and have noticed that I may be with a few of you in the waiting rooms over the next few months. I work with a girl who is due May 2nd who is also going to Redlands.

youngmum3, it only took between 4 and 5 weeks of "practising" for us to fall pregnant. My sister told me it took her 6 months, so i was willing to wait a while, but didn't have to in the end.

Gee, how lucky are you then!! Sometimes mind you, it scares you a bit because of it happening so quickly hey!!! My first didn't take anything at all, I was on the pill and definately not thinking of having children so early, but hey, lovely gift I was given, my second took nearly 3 years of ttc and this 3rd one took just under a year to conceive so I'm glad that the ttc is out of the way for us now as it's so heartbreaking through the journey but sometimes a good thing to help others whom are going through the same thing which many are!!

I'm doing shared-care now...waited over two hours for my last appointment at the hospital which was only a 10minute assessment with a doctor I had never met before...made me miss the NZ system so much!!
So anyway, my next visit out that way won't be until 36weeks!

Hi - I was also born and raised (mostly) in Auckland :D Spent my younger years in West Auckland (Westie!!) then moved to Blenheim for a few years (Dad in the airforce) then back to West Auckland...when I moved out of home I moved to the North Shore :yelclap:

The maternity system is set up so much better in NZ than here - you have your own midwife who you see right through your pregnancy and then she is also present at the birth.
My friend is due in Feb over there, and is finding the support that she gets is wonderful and has helped her to be more relaxed about the unknown.

Hey QTB - I used the Primary care midwifery program in Ballarat last time. It is exactly the same thing. It was amazing - I loved it. The difference between my first pregnancy (shared care and hospital antenatal) and the second Primary Care - was unspeakable! The only complaint I had was I missed my midwife after I had the baby!

They have just started a similar program in Bendigo which I've registered for - but last time I phoned they said they are just too busy. I was devastated. If I can't get in I'll have to try and find a GP to do shared care with - as I don't like the antenatal care. GPs are like hensteeth here - you just can't get one. Every clinic has there books closed.
