I've hardly ever put them down for a sleep when already asleep. I wrap securely, give a dummy, close the door, turn light off and let them settle themselves. We have a glow worm thing attached to the cot and I turn the light on that before I leave the room and it goes off by itself after about 5 seconds, that seems to help too. If they cry, we go back and make sure they have the dummy, and say 'shhh' until they're settled again and leave the room. That is for night time.
During the day, I have DS sleeping in a rocker with a sheepskin in it in the loungeroom. I did this so e would get used to falling asleep with DD around, she can get pretty loud and I don't want him to not be able to settle when there is noise.

Not much other responses here but I'm happy to share what we do.
I don't "self settle" but I asist in settling. So watch for tired signs and respond quickly. Cuddle and comfort and when calm lay baby down. Never lay them down when they are crying, if they grizzle I pat, jiggle a little and say shh shh and pick up if they start to cry and do that over several times if need be. I walk out if there is no grizzling and return if there is. Sometimes I just sit next to the bed.

I also use a baby hammock that bub settles in extremely easily, rarely cries when I place her in awake and she does self settle in this if she wakes after just one sleep cycle usually before I get to the hammock.

I do find if baby is sleeping on me, next to me or in a sling I tend to need to asist her to settle more frequently as she wakes more readily when she is next to me.

mammabear you do a similar method to me, i tend to pick up on tired signs quick, settle bub and sometimes rock if shes fighting the sleep, give her a jiggle and she just nodds off and im able to puther in her cot, im tryin to attempt puttin her in her cot when shes half asleep, so she learns to go to full sleep wen in bed if that makes sense.
