Right now that someone will read this:
Hi there,
Quick question. How long will something like spaghetti bolognese sauce last for in the fridge. I normally just freeze it straight away but DH put it in the fridge. I cooked it on Monday night, do you think it is still safe for tonight?
Thanks:)

a) you're a nutcase

b) you shouldn't be abusing your modulating powers to change titles on boring threads. If you start a boring thread, you live with it like the rest of us! :p

c) yes, eat it tonight and it will be fine. Just re-heat it properly.

Anything else?

I have always followed the 3 day rule for leftovers, I heard it on a cooking show, not sure which one, I figure they know what they are talking about with bacteria. Especially now with the pregnancy I dont want to take any chances. If leftovers are still in the fridge after 3 days I throw it out.

I usually eat food anything up to a week old - esp if near the back of the fridge, but maybe that's a bit too keen?!
Make sure you heat it really thoroughly - no cold spots. I'm pretty sure that's the main thing. Also depends how quickly it went in the fridge after it was cooked.

What a FASCINATING thread :p

Thanks for all your responses everyone. This has been a real eye opener. If we are not going to eat something the next day I always freeze it. We are so suss on left overs.....
Excellent.;)
Sorry to get everyones hopes up for something really great......but really in the end, not having to cook tonight is pretty great, for me anyway.:o

We go by the 3 day rule.on the 4th day if it is still there its the dogs!! With refridgeration after it is cooked, let it rest on the bench or whatever til it is still warm but not hot..i.e.wont steam up the lid if it is covered, then staight into the fridge. This stops bacterial growth. Always re heat til steaming hot and dont reheat a second time, heat up only what you want....and i was watching ready steady cook the other day.he said these rules were mostly precationary but RICE is a definate reheat once dish. Apparently it is one of the biggest causes of food poisoning as bacteria thrive in it.

shanz - thanks!!! i didn't know that about rice! i just assumed it was quite harmless! i don't know y, it's just so white & fluffy & innocent looking! ;) mind u, i have been to a sake factory (in japan)& they make rice into the most POTENT alcohol!!!
