View Full Version : Baby carriers?
Hi,
Just wondering which baby carriers/ slings people are using. I have the Babasling but the little bub doesn't seem to like it. Not sure if I'm using it correctly either but he cries when I try to put him in. Seems to get swallowed up inside it.
I'm thinking of getting the Ergo. Seems to have a good rep but are they OK for newborns?
Any recommendations?

Thanks, will check it out! :)
For a structured carrier definitely an Ergo!
I have 2 hug-a-bub style wraps for this age then the ergo and a mei tai for when she's bigger. I have a BB in the cupboard that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole...killed my shoulders by the time DD1 was a couple months old and puts too much pressure on baby's hips, pelvis and spine. They cost the same as ergo's too.

They should probably all only be used in moderation though...im sure the BB would be fine just like the others if not used for extended periods:yes:

I have an ergo with the insert and it is fantastic. You can even BFeed in it too. I got mine from "Babes in arms" and tey were very prompt too.
I too have a Baba sling and it has far too much material for a newborn, myfanwy gets very swallowed up and does not like it much.
Also, use a Jazsling pouch and she loves that...
Good luck
I want an Ergo now- it's all everyone is talking about!
I have a Hug-a-Bub- it's all everyone was talking about when Hugh was a new born.
It's great around home but too hard to put on in a shopping centre car park- so when I go shopping I just use a cheapie Tomy carrier- but not great for long periods of time- and apparently not meant to be great for babies.

hunter has a mei tai....cant wait 2 use it
until then, bugaboo or bb
Kazza - put the HAB on at home before you go out...or stand facing your car and rest the material on the car seat as you wrap it around yourself so it doesn't drag on the floor.
Now I have two hands...the issue I have with the BB is that for the price I got to use 2 or 3 times and it killed my shoulders...Emily was no more than 6kg when I used it....it's weight limit is 10kg (talking about normal BB here...not the sport one...I know nothing about that.)
The ergo we got for the same price, we still use it with DD1 at 21 months and it's extremely comfortable. Has been used almost every day...also has back option carry which is brilliant once babies are at the age where they can reach out and grab things...harder when they are on your back.
My HAB wraps I love for newborns...you can fold their legs up froggy style so there is no pressure on their spine, hips or pelvis what so ever. I will use them up until about 9 months of age...then if they lean back too much the material gets slack and I found with DD1 I was forever re-tightening it.
Mei-tai's I love the same as Ergo's...although the Ergo is slightly more comfortable for the older baby.
So, I personally would never buy a BB again cause for me it was a complete waste of money and IMO there are far more superior carriers out there. I was sucked in by their marketing but wish I'd read up on them first!
Sounds like the Ergo is the most popular choice. Seth isn't that keen on falling asleep in his pram which means that taking him out is hard as he starts crying after a while and wants to be carried. Might have to invest in the Ergo so we're not stuck at home for the next 6 months!

We've got a baba sling (tried it out the other day and Jake SCREAMED) and a baby bjorn active (with back support) which we haven't used as yet...
Will let you know how it goes:yes:
I ordered an organic denim Ergo and infant insert last week - can't wait to get it :yelclap:
I highly recommend anewblessing.com.au - and they have 10% off Ergo's at the moment!
I've just picked up my Ergo which I scored off Ebay, with the baby insert. Hope Seth likes it. :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:
He's asleep now so will try it out tomorrow.
Livy- did you try yours out yet?
ergo user here, have to say i hated it the first two weeks, she was just to tiny and got lost in it. as she has seriously chubbed up and lengthened i thought i'd try it yesterday at the shops and it was great.
she slept the whole time and it was super comfy for me, didnt even notice it.
i bought a jazsling to tide me over, she loved it but it wasnt that comfy for me. i think this is partly due to the fact i have really small shoulders....not really sure.
3cherubs, tell me more bout bf in the ergo, i cant think how i could possibly do it?

Hi mcb - that was a pretty good score off of Ebay! Have you tried it yet?
Yep I got mine and I love it! Ethan was having his afternoon grumpy time - seems to be around 4-ish where he gets grumpy and nothing I do helps for an hour or so. I put him in the Ergo and went for a walk -he fell asleep straight away and it is so comfortable too.
Tried Seth in the Ergo twice today. First time he was good, was time for a feed so he was looking for my boob the whole time. The second time was this arvo when he was crying, and putting him in it didn't stop him. So I will keep trying. I think he'll get used to it.
Jamb- for bf you put his head over to the side of your boob at the right height, with both legs sticking out the bottom of the other side. This morning when Seth was hungry he naturally found my boob whilst sitting in the Ergo. I didn't try feeding him in it but it looked like he was in the right position for it.

I love my Ergo. :) For a very new baby, we found ring slings and similar to be the best (ie: Hip Bubby slings, Earthslings, Orange slings). Hug-a-Bubs (or any wrap of that nature) are wonderful for new babes as well. After the newborn stage, Ergo all the way! (There is a very similar carrier called the Patapum which I think might be a bit cheaper, here's a comparison between the two:- http://www.littlepossums.co.uk/information/softcarriers.htm - I still love my Ergo though!)
Baby Bjorns are very bad for babies. They dangle babies by their crotches, a highly unnatural position with an inappropriate distribution of weight which damages their pelvis and spine. Often the damage done by Baby Bjorn style carriers is not picked up on until much later in life (ie: teen years or young adulthood). Some further information on this:-
http://continuum-concept.org/reading/spinalStress.html
And some info on safe babywearing techniques:-
http://www.thebabywearer.com/articles/HowTo/Positioning.pdf
All other carriers aside from the Baby Bjorn can be used all day, every day (and all night if you so wish!) - there's no time limit to babywearing, just whatever you and your baby are happy with.

Oh well that's just great :banghead: $190 down the drain...
Why is the BB so highly awarded, if it's so bad for babies?????

I know Nic..it sucks doesn't it! I was just as peeved when I found out too. DH keeps telling me to sell ours on ebay but I feel bad cause I know it's bad...so almost 2 years on it's still in our cupboard.
I love the Ergo!
Took Seth for a 1/2 hour walk in it tonight and he was asleep within a couple of minutes. In the pram he would have stayed awake and probably started crying.
Looks like we'll be able to get out of the house after all. Thanks to the Ergo:smiliedance:.
I thought the BB was OK for them once they are able to sit up on their own? Just not for newborns?

MCB - The BB can take from 8lbs...they just have to be facing you, not outwards, and the head support needs to be up
