With J I went into labour 4 weeks early so I hadn't had my Strep B test. They did the test in hospital and I found out that I did have it (at the time thought it was an STD!!! Had never heard of it! :o ) and was given the appropriate treatment for it.
With Lucas I had a c/section so I didn't have the test.
My friend and I were talking today and we're wondering, once you have Strep B do you then have it for every pregnancy or is it something that you can have for one pregnancy/birth but not the next?
As you can tell we had a lot of pressing issues to talk about today!

Thank you for that...I'll call her now!

Once we'd run out of nasty things to say about KRudd and Co. and how we'd both find it difficult to turn down Bill Clinton in the oval office then we moved on to Strep B funnily enough!

I'm not too sure about this but I dont think the bub could contract Strep B if you have a cesearian I think its just something passed to bub through the birth canal

as I said I dont know for sure hmmm I might have a look into it

strep b can come and go.... its a bug that lives in your anus and sometimes works its way to the vaginal area... if treated with antibiotics it kills the bug... but can return....

when in labour if you have strep b you are given 1 or a couple of doses of antibiotic(usually every 4 hours) to kill the bug.... if bubby gets it on there skin it can be fatal..

it can cause many different problems from respritory (sp) failure to brain damage and even death....

I had it for my 4th baby but not for my first three.

I had to have a drip in labour (am allergic to penecillian) which was to take 40 mins to go thru and then another drip 4 hours later while still in labour.

The first drip got half way through and then my baby was born. Yep, 24 minute labour- thankfully she didnt have any ill effects from not being "protected"

Because it can come and go they usually presume you have it once you have test positive evn though the next test comes up negative.

I tested positive with DS1 so had to have the antibiotics with all 3 labours. The antibiotics didn't worry me, what annoy me was the hospital I went to with DS3 changed their policy which I only found out when I arrived there in labour that I had to be hooked up to the monitor constantly  - I wanted a active labour - so was very cranky

So all it takes is for someone to scratch their bum (or not wash hands with soap after going to the toilet) and make you a coffee or a sandwich... and VOILA!

with ds1 it came back negative to strep but bub ended up swallowing fluid and getting infant pneumonia.

Then with ds2 my doctor advised I take antibiotics in labour whether I tested positive or not so I did.

And with ds3 I tested positive for strep so had antibiotics in labour again.

I didn't have it with the first two and i had the twins at 36 weeks and hadn't had the GBS test done yet so they put me on an IV of anti biotics just as a precautionary.

or is it something that you can have for one pregnancy/birth but not the next?
It is actually something you can have one week and not the next. Which is why it baffles me that they test at 36 weeks. You may be positive at 36 weeks and negative at 37, or vice versa.

I don't bother with the test at all.

I know, imagine all these mothers and poor babies who aren't 'protected' by the magic antibiotics, who have tested negative, but are actually positive at the time of birth   Who knows, in the not too distant future, we will all preemtively be dosed with antibiotics just to be on the safe side

Course, I wonder what's holding 'em up? Hmmm... maybe the pharmaceutical companies haven't offered to pay enough yet  :p

*I am really not into conspiracy theories people... most of it is a joke!*

I won't be having the test next time either. I won't be at the hospital anyway so the test will be a bit pointless.
