Whilst we were on IVF i was told that because of the condition of my uterus, i was at risk of going into labour early, but i still didn't click when 3 1/2 weeks before Thomas' EDD i woke up with pains in my tummy! We were scheduled for c/s on the 3rd August, EDD being 14th, and Thomas came on the 23rd July.

I said to DH on the Sunday night that he should call in sick on the Monday (bad, i know), and we should just spend one last day together just us (i was working on the weekends). He was humming and ahhing about it, but called his work at 7:15 on the Monday morning and told a white lie - that i had been having pains and he wanted to stay with me to check on me. Funny thing, though, i had actually been having pains on the hour since 12 that night, and from 6 they were 20 minutes apart. When he got off the phone i said "hun, actually, i think perhaps we should call the hospital, cos i may have jinxed myself!"

The pains weren't bad, so i didn't think that i could be in labour. As Thomas was breach and supposedly had a big head, the hospital wanted me to come in straight away. Going in there i remembered i had to interview someone that morning, but i said to DH that i thought we would be back so it would be fine. Got hooked up to the monitor, and after 5 mins the midwife said she thought it was BH. But a few mins later, i had a huge "pain", and she told me these were contractions! She called the ob, who said i was to be admitted and booked me in for 2 hours time.

The next 2 hours were a whirl, and the prep was all fine. I was a bit worried about the epidural, but needn't have been - it hurt a bit, and gave a weird sensation, with lots of shaking and feeling cold but was fine - i had read a lot and asked a lot of questions so was well informed. A few mins after the screen went up i asked when i could expect to see my baby and they said that his legs were out. I had felt slight tugging, but that was it! A few seconds later i heard a scream and he was on my chest before being whisked away to be checked over. I was a bit worried about his lungs, but he was fine.

Then things started to go a bit haywire, with the paed, midwife and DH over checking out DS, and all the surgery staff faffing about in a mad rush behind the screen. I couldn't hear what the obs was telling me 'cos Thomas was screaming, but the anaethetist came over and started prepping my right arm for an IV line, so i asked him what was going on. He looked really worried, and i heard them asking about getting blood etc. He said he had to concentrate to put in the line and then would tell me. He told me that part of my placenta was stuck and as it looked similar to the uterus tissue, it was hard to cut out, so they were trying hard but i may lose blood, so had to have an IV in case.

After a few minutes, the obs poked his head around and said he got it, it was ok, but i was lucky as i may have had to have a hysterectomy - i'd had Placenta Acrita (sp?), and i had to keep a close eye on clots etc in case they hadn't got it all.

Even though that was really scary and one negative, i didn't find my c/s a negative experience at all. We finally got our precious little boy, after nearly 3 years of trying to fall pregnant. What i was saying as i was wheeled out of the theatre is what i think sums it all up "I'm a mum!". That's the most important thing for me.
