Hi all i am very interested in using modern cloth nappies but am not sure on how they work. i just have a few questions if i could ask
1. how absorbant are they?
2. how often would you change them?
3. what do you find the best one are? AIO's or pockets?
4. is there any type that you have say the covers but the boosters are against skin not in a pocket so you just change the booster iykwim?

any information would be muchly appreciated. i am also looking at making my own so if any one knows of a good pattern and what fabric to use that would be great too

Hi:wave:

1. The absorbancy depends on the nappy really. And if they are pockets you can stuff them to suit what you need.

2. I change them the same as I would change her if she was wearing disposables. Probably every 3 or 4 hours.

3. I like both AIO and pockets, for different times. The AIO's take a while to dry, but they are handy for when I haven't stuffed the pockets. I mainly use pockets though during the day and AIO's when out (and sometimes fitteds too!)

4. Yes there are nappies like that. They are called All-in-twos. Um, Berry Plush are the only ones I can think of but I'm sure there are more... someone else might be able to help with that!

Hope that helps!

1. how absorbant are they? Each nappy is different as is each baby, its just a matter of finding out what works for your bub... but i find they are wayyyy more absorbant than sposies!

2. how often would you change them? i change brayden every time he poos straight away, otherwise 3-4 hourly :D

3. what do you find the best one are? AIO's or pockets? Brayden is a heavy wetter, so i prefer pockets cos i can just add more inserts

4. is there any type that you have say the covers but the boosters are against skin not in a pocket so you just change the booster iykwim? Yep, all-in-twos :D

ETA: Iv heard great things about the HoneyBoy pattern :D

1. how absorbant are they?

This depends on what fabric you use or inserts you buy. I find bamboo to be the best and microfibre, the microfibre needs to be used/teamed with another absorbant material too though or it can leak with compression, eg when bubs sits down for too long.

2. how often would you change them?

I change when I know bub's has wet or every 3 to 4 hours if we are out and about.

3. what do you find the best one are? AIO's or pockets?

I like pockets for during the day and fitteds with a wool cover at night (last 12+ hours)

4. is there any type that you have say the covers but the boosters are against skin not in a pocket so you just change the booster iykwim?

Well, I think you can buy some like this, Berry Plush AIO's work this way and Sugarpea's I think.
I have actually made my own little system, I did it orginally to see me through while I built up my stash, but it works so well that I'm going to keep using it.
I made little mini pockets that I lay inside PUL, wool or fleece covers and then I just have to change them when wet or soiled. I rotate between 2 covers in the day and let the other one air inbetween changes. If it is damp or soiled at a change then it goes in the wash. I have made my own bamboo inserts that i put inside my mini pockets and I'm making some microfibre ones also.

If you google weeweka there are free patterns you can download. I use the honeyboy pattern too which is good. Microfleece is a good material to use as a stay dry inner or liner and for the outer you can use PUL, Fleece and Wool.

You can totally do it!! It's sooo easy and cost effective. They are really slim fitting too. The pic I posted was from when I first tried them and it was stuffed with a folded terry flat. Now that I've made my bamboo inserts they are about half as thick or less.

Here's another picture (http://s183.photobucket.com/albums/x49/jdore07/?action=view&current=144_3254.jpg) with a bamboo insert in it

(can you tell I forgot to stick the velco tabs back when washing one time:rolleyes: :o )

I want to steal it too! Fab idea! How much did it cost to make the bamboo inserts can I ask?

I've made two different kinds of bamboo inserts, the ones that are folded to become 6 layers thick cost $3 each to make and the ones that are folded to be 9 layers thick at front and 6 layers thick at the back cost me $5 each.

This bamboo insert (http://s183.photobucket.com/albums/x49/jdore07/?action=view&current=144_3256.jpg)is 3 layers thick before folding. It is a long strip 12 cm by 82 cm! Long I know but dries faster this way and doesn't take up much room on the line:thumbsup: Having them this shape allows you to have more layers where they are most needed without having to make the whole nappy too bulky.

This one (http://s183.photobucket.com/albums/x49/jdore07/?action=view&current=144_3257.jpg)is only 2 layers thick before folding, it is good for at home when I change often and it dries faster. It is a rectangle 30cm x 35 - 40cm.

I hope this helps:)

Hi Welcome!

1. how absorbant are they?VERY, much more than a sposie and they mould to the babies shape much better too!
2. how often would you change them? Depends what is in them.. I can go 4 hrs minimum with just microfibre and still feel dry.
3. what do you find the best one are? AIO's or pockets? I like both!!
4. is there any type that you have say the covers but the boosters are against skin not in a pocket so you just change the booster iykwim? You can with bp's I have heard but I prefer to change the whole thing.

1. how absorbant are they?
Depends on what material is used. Bamboo is the most absobent, followed by hemp then microfibre.

2. how often would you change them?
You should change a nappy, whether it is cloth OR disposable after every wee and after every poo, regardless.

I change DD's nappy no more than every 2 hours, unless she's sleeping or the nappy is still dry.

In my opinion, to leave a child sitting in a nappy any longer than 2 hours is simply disgusting. I wouldn't want to sit in a wet nappy for 3+ hours so I wont subject my children to that either! Ikkiness!

3. what do you find the best one are? AIO's or pockets?
I like both for different reasons, during the day I will use either pockets or AIOs, just whatever I grab first. But I always use a fitted with a wool soaker for nights.

4. is there any type that you have say the covers but the boosters are against skin not in a pocket so you just change the booster iykwim?

You can get AI2 nappies where the absorbent insert snaps in the outer shell, so if the outer shell is still dry and not soiled you can snap in a clean insert.

You can use a fitted with a cover, where you just change the fitted nappy and then put the cover back on.

Or for a younger baby you can 'pad fold' a terry flat, prefold, a square or hemp/bamboo and lay it inside a cover. At change time, just put a new 'pad' into the cover.

2. i change every 4 hours because i use a fleece layer, which is feel-dry. i've touched his skin on taking off a wet nappy, and it really does feel dry, so i don't think there's any ickiness at all.

rightaway with poo, obviously

to go 4 hours, i need a microfibre booster (3 layers) plus 2-3 layers of bamboo in the wetzone (just a tiny booster there will do).

3. AIOs are better as pocket inserts can scrunch and cause leaking at the legs. but pockets dry much faster, and you can customise the stuffing.

i too find that only a bamboo fitted, w cover, will do for night.

4. yes - itti bitti AIOs do this. the booster is fleece topped, and snap into the cover/shell, which can be reused. i love it.

just look for AIO/2 where ALL the absorbent stuff as well as the stay-dry layer against baby's skin comes out.

jbie - I use fleece liners too, but still don't like the idea of sitting in pee for 4 hours ;)
