hi

my son is 2 weeks old and is suffering from really bad wind after almost every feed...... is this unusual??

all the things i have read about breastfeeding says that breastfed babies generally dont need to be burped and dont get bad pains ......if they are attaching properly.. does this mean he isnt attached properly??? or is he just unlucky??

feeding dosnt hurt so i thoiught that mean he was attaching right...

Hi, My son had really bad wind after bf in the first few weeks. Sometimes it was the things I ate that triggered it. I used to tilt him slightly upwards while feeding and placed him on his tummy over my arm and rubbed his back after feeds. He usually let out huge burps when I did this. My son gradually got better after about six week though. Doesn't sound like he's attaching wrong if it feels comfortable. As long as he's not swallowing air.

I heard that breastfed babies dont get wind... I'm just disappointed that no one told my DS!! ... he DEFINATELY needs burping (after all feeds... bottle or breast) - and STILL has wind trouble ..

it has settled slightly since 8 weeks old... (the more they move independently the better the wind seems to get)

it is horrible to watch your own bubs with wind... ((hugs)) just remember that it DOES get better!!!

Both my firstborn and third have had wind and both fully breastfed. Can't remember how long it took DS#1 to get past it (too long ago) but DS#2 is only 7 1/2 weeks so it is just starting to ease. If he starts getting fidgety and pops on and off my boob I know he has wind so I sit him with one hand on his back and the other under his chin. He usually lets out a few good burps and can then reattach and continue feeding. We often get vomit too! He actually burped so loud yesterday that he jumped with fright at himself. It was pretty cute though!

Hi JeSsIkA, IMO it is very common for bf babies to get wind during every feed mainly because they are gulping down air whilst drinking their milk even if they are attached properly. Even the " so-called " professional experts do get their facts wrong and for any of them to tell you that bf babies don't need burping... well it fits into the same category as - once a c-sect always a c-sect because of risking uterine rupture.

SalOO8 quote: He actually burped so loud yesterday that he jumped with fright at himself.

Aaaawwwwwwww:)

and: If he starts getting fidgety and pops on and off my boob I know he has wind

Yes this happens with my ds3 too and I just prophim up on my shoulder and pat his back until he burps and then I put him back onto the boob. If I can't get the wind out I pass him to dh2 who has the magic touch for de-winding every time.

Yes it does get easier to handle as they become more mobile and the babies are then more able to de-wind themselves.

My 6 week old squirms and pulls herself off the breast at most feeds. I usually take her off and she has a good burp, but it all seems to upset her as if she's really frustrated and doesn't feed properly. :( Are there any medications for this (infacol? gripe water?) Is this colic??

I had the same problem with my dd when bf, it drove me mad because she couldn't feed properly it felt like she was constantly on and off. I did try all the remedies that everyone raves about but found that they only made the problem worse.

The one thing that seemed to help was that we would lie dd on her change table and move her legs like she was riding a bike and this really helped to get rid of the wind. Then she would feed again until she got too much wind again.

I also had a fantastic lactation consultant who taught me how to bf lying down. What came of that was I was more relaxed and so was dd which seemed to create a much happier feeder.

I would recommend if you can get a lactation consultant to come to your home and teach you some methods in the comfort of your own home you will be amazed at the difference.

Good luck.

I found if I ate or drank anything citrus(eg orange juice) DS got wind pain. HE burped quite well, generally and was quite a prolific chucker (think of the biggest spew you've seen a baby do and multiply by hundreds!). But I found tummy time helped alot with easing the pain.

My boy also suffered for the first few weeks with wind. Is now 8mths old and occasionally will wake up about 1/2 hr after being put to bed and when picked up has a big burp and drifts back to sleep. He is too out of it to get wind up after his bedtime feed sometimes. I have found 'infants friend' great when he has had a run of belly aches and the bike legs thing works wonders too.
good luck.:)

BF babies definetly get wind. (I would think more so considering they are effected by what you eat). My ds and now ds both got and have bad wind. I burp sometimes between and always after each feed.

Have found a few drops of infacol before bf help get the burp up. Infants friend helpled for wind relief with ds and gripe water seems to be working for dd (completely different babies!).

Have found onion and chilli effected both and chocolate seems to be effecting dd.
