I am a muslim, and as a muslim it is part of my religion to circumcise boys, so I am pro- circumcision..

I had a girl, and I was just wondering if I had a boy and had to get him circumcised, do they use any sort of pain relief for the bub?

I am not 100% on how the procedure works.. but I do remember my midwife saying they can give general if the bub is over 1 month or something?

I can't imagine them doing it without anaesthesia no matter how old, would be unkind and painful otherwise.

My 2 boys were done under 2 months of age and I was given a cream to put on their penis an hour before hey got done to numb it. They had the plasti bell method. I'll pm you some more info :)

One of my friends told me yesterday that with her ds, they've given him the cream to put on and 3 injections..If I have to get my ds done (who's 14 month old), I'm gonna ask them to put him under or anything else that will make him won't feel anything at all..:)

Our son was done at 4wks of age in our private hospital. He had Panadol then emla numbing cream applied to his penis then a local injection prior to the op.

Thanks so much for the info! I always worry about hurting bubba like everyone does.

I guess if/when I have a baby boy, I will have to see if I can get it done later so he can go under general.. Although I guess I would also have to see what religion says about when they are supposed to have it done.

It's a good thing we can do it when they're so young and that God makes them forget or not remember!

Many religious circumcisions are performed after giving the baby wine as pain relief.

The wine is used in a Jewish circ not Muslim.

My sons circ was performed with a local, i wouldnt have done it any other way.

My son was given a numbing cream an hour before the circ then given a local. I haven't heard of any circs done in the last 10+ years that didn't use anesthetic.

As I understand it, circumcision for religious reasons under Islam is to be performed before puberty. Most people wait until their children are over 5 and thus are given adequate pain relief during and after the procedure.

No, in most cases they dont pain relief, sometimes they may use topical anaesthetic, but this is really not reccommended for babies under 6 months old as it can cause nerve damage.

If you have to get it done, do it under a general anaesthetic. Its much kinder.

I agree, with the general anaesthetic.

The alcohol bit sorta makes it not too likely for a Muslim ritual :D

My grandmother told me that back in her day, they'd put some brandy in a bottle with milk and give it to the baby boy before he was circ'd...

However, in the present, it is much more 'professional', my son was given anesthetic cream on his penis before the circumcision. He cried a little but was over it soon enough and fell asleep in the car on the way home.
