Hello everyone,

I have recently just looked into the idea of a christening and this is the information I have found out.

A christening is the first step in becoming a Christian, it is an acceptance f the child by the church. The second step to being a Christian is a Confirmation which occurs either in adolescence or adulthood. Christians believe that children are born with Original Sin, that is the sin committed and passed on by Adam and Eve. The Water component of the christening cleanses the original sin so the child can enter the Christian faith with a clean slate. The only down side that I can see in not having a christening is that you may not get into a christian school. However many christian schools do allow a number of non christened children anyway.

I dont consider myself to be religous, although I am christened myself, so I find it hypocritical to have a christening, I believe in giving my daughter the chance to consider her own spirituality and choose for herself wether she wishes to follow a religion.

For me a baby naming is the way to go, as you can have the ceremony personalised for you, you can even have themes. Another which I thought was very sweet was that the celebrants can pay tribute to grandparent or family members who have passed away.

There is a group called Family Celebrants Australia (located in NSW), they have a website which gives some details. It has an enquiry form and they are happy to just answer questions. ]www.familycelebrants.com.au

Hope this helps
