View Full Version : Please help.....5 1/2 yr old bed wetting
My boy who will be 6 in December is still wetting the bed.
It's getting frustrating cause it doesn't happen all the time.
He isn't aloud drinks after 6pm only a small amount at dinner.
He goes to the toilet before bed around 7:30-8 then i take him again before i go to bed but he still wets at least once a week if not more but he does have dry nights.
I have tried to ask him is he is awake when he does it and he said no.
The other night he had wet when i went in before bed so i changed him and the sheets and when i asked him in the morning he told me that he didn't wet the bed (he did)
I thought he may have been cold but he isn't.
His room is next to the toilet and he has a light to see. I don't think it is medical as he does have dry nights
Any advice would be appreciated

Don't worry about it I have been stressing over the same thing for some time now...my eldest still wets the bed and he is 6 1/2....he wears pullups and wets almost every night. I have contacted a continence program and they said wait until he is worried about which at the moment he isn't. I was annoyed cause my 4 1/2 year old doesn't wet his bed at night but my older one does :hair: I am waiting until he is 7 and then taking him to a dry bed program. Has anyone else in your families been bed wetters? It is hereditary.

My son is nearly 6 and will go a month without wetting the bed then a week where he will every night. I friend's daughter was 8 before she finally stopped. I think it's a lot more common than people realise, and the only real advice I've ever heard is not to make a big deal about it as that can cause other hangups. Apparently my FIL was nearly 10 before he stopped. On the other hand my eldest (daughter) was 2 when she stopped wetting at night - so I was unprepared for this one :)
my 5yr old (6 in March next year) still wets maybe once a month.. I'm just begining to think he is sleeping heavier those nights and just not waking to go..
My 9yr old sister is on medication for bed wetting though..

I think one of my male cousins wet the bed until he was 8, or possibly older. I've heard its more common in boys. I also agree with Kezabelle - try not to make a fuss about it and don't worry he'll eventually grow out of it.
Dry nights are not a learned behaviour, nor are they a completely conscious choice ... they are a result of a chemical switch in your brain activating that sends signals saying you need to wake up and get to the toilet and also causes your urine to concentrate more over night.
I know of a family of 4 children who all wet until thier early teens and there was absolutely nothing they could do about it. None of them had concentrated urine so thier bladder just released when it was full - like a baby's does.
My dd is 6 ½ and still in night pull-ups as is my ds who is 4 ½. Neither of them are ready yet, although my ds seems to be almost there. They are both incredibly heavy sleepers which doesn't help either (although that part has always kept me sane - iykwim).
If you asked privately, all of the parents of a year one class, most will admit that thier children are either still wetting on a regular basis or are still wearing some form of night nappy. I know of several in my dd's class and she is almost a year younger than most of her classmates.
I wouldn't be too worried ...
Thanks for the responce guys it makes me feel better knowing it is commen and maybe he is a heavy sleeper.
Its hard not to fuss when i'm washing sheets constently:hair: :) But u got to love them.

My 5yo son (6 in Nov) still wets very heavily every night. Two things - he hasn't got the capacity to hold enough wee in his bladder so it needs to be trained to hold more which I will do during Christmas school holidays as he's at primary school now and the other thing is his brain and his bladder aren't communicating when he's asleep to tell him he needs to go.
Yes it is hereditary. I wet until I was 9yo and I needed one of those bells.
He's very unconcerned about it and aside from the cost of the pull ups (god they're expensive) we are unconcerned too. Still, I wish he'd stop!

I also wet the bed until about 8yo. Its important not to make your child embarrassed or ashamed, they already feel bad enough. What worked for me was 'special tablets' from the doctor which actually turned out to be placebos. After a few weeks I no longer needed them.

If you buy the Aldi training pants they are only $16.99 for a pack of 28. I use these for my kids and it means I only have to buy one pack a fortnight ... much easier than washing sheets and uncomfortable kids!
