When can you start giving vegemite sandwiches?

I think i started with DD1 at about 7/8 months? She had no teeth though and kept sucking it in and nearly choking, so would cut it up into little squares small enough so that they wouldn't choke her if she swallowed them without 'gumming' them to bits first. I think wholemeal bread is probably better than white bread from experience, as it doesn't go all sticky and gooey and stick to the tops of their mouths?

just keep in mind that vegemite is very salty. For under 1 I'd only use the tiniest amount to give a bit of a different taste to the bread. And even for my 2 year old I don't use much.

Might as well start them off with a good habit of wholemeal bread :)

Everybody needs some salt in their diet, but too much can lead (i believe) to high blood pressure. High blood pressure isn't really a risk for infants or toddlers, but if they develop a habit of eatting salty foods (most of which also tend to be high in fat or are junk foods) it could lead to problems later on.

Having a quick browse through the internet (searched on child nutrition salt) I also found this:

Salt should be avoided in the diet of young children as their kidneys are not mature enough to cope with large amounts. Many common foods such as cheese, manufactured soup, packet meals and bread are quite high in added salt. Avoid too many salty snacks, such as crisps and other snack foods. Spread yeast extract thinly or use the low salt varieties. Reference http://www.vegsoc.org/info/childre1.html

i started coby about 6 months and the CHN almost had a heartattack and told me sandwiches were no good for kids under 12 months...

coby is fine... loves his vegemite toast and sandwiches...

the first few times we had a few chokes... but i think it was the different texture.. so i sat him on my lap and he was fine and then after a week put him into his highchair and then i ate breakfast with him otherwise he gets distracted as to what i am doing and shoves the whole thing into his mouth...

anyway i dont see any problem with giving them vegemite sandwiches

I've also heard that too much salt can damage their kidneys

I started feeding vegemite on toast at around 7 months (very thinly spread).

I was giving shania toast with vegemite when she was 6 months onwards. She loved it!!! I also gave her sandwiches too - she gagged a bit so just watch them the first couple of times till they get used the texture. You will find that most probably then not it will get stuck to the roof of their mouth.
