View Full Version : Eczema cream
Hi there all,
Can anyone recommend an over the counter cream that works for eczema???
Hi
There is no one cream that works for everyone and most are pretty ineffective. That is excepting the 1% cortisone ones that should be used as infrequently as you can get away with. I have wasted alot of money on creams. This is the frustrating thing about eczema, what has some effect for one person does not work for another. If you google 'eczema' and 'cream' you will find a wide variety of suggestions (hundreds). I recommend trying to find the cause of the eczema like food or environmental allergies and eliminiating exposure, lots of moisturiser, cortisone and any other treatment cream you find works for you. Remember to patch test first.
Best of luck.

Like Loui said, there are alot of creams and what works for one baby might not work for another. Its very important to patch test first. Alpha Keri oil made my baby flare up, while it worked for someone else.
If you contact the eczema organisation http://www.eczema.org.au/index2.html you can sign up for $30 and get some samples.
Its trial and error. Common brands used are QV, cetaphil, dermaveen, gaia skin naturals, grahams natural alternatives, alpha keri oil (lanolin based) and many more. Ask your chemist for a referral.
Personally I found QV kids balm to work as a good moisturiser. I'm still finding a suitable bathing lotion.

Hi there,
Your bubs sounds like mine, he has reflux and eczema too or at least i think its eczema the nurses just keep saying its a heat rash but I dont think it looks like that. I have the reflux sorted, now just have to sort this rash out. Thanx for those products, a lot of people talk about the QV so I might try that. If I find a bath lotion that works ill let you know.
Happy days!

I have had success with the QV range. Although it has not cured DD1's eczema,it has relieved it. You need to remember that.
A good cream I have found is the dermeze ointment. Its only about 7.50 a tub and lasts a while.
best of luck to you and as others have said, it is trial and error. Cetaphil i have heard, is a good range too.

:) best of luck.
we just had a scary day with her eczema flaring up and being unsettled for 3 days straight. no sleeping, just screaming. I put it down to the fact that she'd had her 4 month needles but I also had eaten peanut butter sandwiches and tried a few different products on her.
Saw the after hours GP this afternoon and she said its an allergy to possibly peanuts and to get a referral for an allergy test!!

Have tried multitudes of 'natural' products and the only thing we have found that works every time is over the counter hydrocortisone Dermaid 1% soft. There are a million different things that you can do to reduce the problem, but with non specific (ie no identifiable trigger) eczema, low dose hydrocortisone usually is the first step to getting a flare up under control. We use it every day during winter (very dry air) and every second day during summer and we hope and pray like crazy that DD will grow out of it before too long.

I know how you feel, i am currently testing a couple of natural products as i dont want to go to the cortisone just yet, i know it usually works but hopefully i can find something from the health food shop that works just as good, if i do ill let you know what I found that works. Do you use a moisturiser on DD? if you do which one do you use??

Hey, I get the dreaded Eczema....I used to get Arizicort (script) but ran out and got Dermaid, over the counter one.....that seems pretty good. Have you tried Goats Milk Soap from health shops? Apparently that is really good.....or rub some Alpha Keri Oil into it and bath in it also....that u can just get from chemist....

If the skin is very dry try using an oats bath. You can get one in a powder form, QV I think it is, in a big box, it is awesome. Otherwise you can make some yourself by blending up oats mixed with sunflower oil, then putting it in a stocking, and hanging it under the running tap.
We use Hydraderm Sorbelene cream in the tub, with added Glyceriene (sp?) every night after thier bath from head to toe, even when thier skin is good. And then when patches flair up we use the QV kids balm.
Noah thank goodness has grown out of the reflux, and most of the excema, but tends to get a bit rashy when he's eaten something he's allergic to, or around his ankles when his skin dries out too much

We use QV intensive moisturiser after every bath and two or three times during the day. Our allergist assured us that over the counter (OTC) cortisone won't thin her skin if used long term. The prescription ones are more of a problem though.
If it is any consolation, I get told all the time that corticosteroids (for asthma) stunt growth. I have taken them all my life and I'm 185cm :D .

When DS has flare ups I put elocon (prescribed) cream on the area and it is practically gone by the next day - it is amazing stuff.
For preventative treatment we use QV oil in the bath, QV bath lotion to wash him, Dermaveen moisutirser twice a day (works just as well as QV intensive moisturiser but half the price)
This seems to be working well for us but he does get flare ups if he overheats. It is so sad to see them so itchy and irritated : ( I get eczema too but not as bad as DS, makes me sad that such little people have to deal with it : (

Thanx a million for your advice, everyone is saying ELOCON, ELOCON, ELOCON, I must get some of this, i am sick to death of trying natural products and wasting my money cause they are not working. I also am one of those people who like to see results straight away and people have since told me natural products can take a few days if not weeks, I can't wait that long! I don't think my DS can either!

so with the kerri oil- we put it in the bath- can i just rub it onto her excma? God i cant spell that- and she calls it her "ex-em-na".
I have Advantan which is a script but it works. It is a cortizone one so i think i better get some Dermaid from the chemist until i go back to the docs.
Thanks!

M using beta fro my eczema…I have noticed that the rashes do not itch anymore and the eruption of the rash has become less frequent. Eczema cannot be cured but with beta it is well managed. If you have any doubt about this medicine then please read this article on page http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s391-s-BETA.aspx about this medicine.
