View Full Version : Sick Kids At Playgroup
DS goes to playgroup every Tuesday (run by playgroups nsw).
Each Tuesday there is at least 1 or 2 sick babies with a cold. And one week there was a lady who bought her son who had a cold, vomiting and diareah (sp?) !!
And every Wednesday morning DS wakes up with a cold which lasts at least a week, so lately we have only been getting to playgroup once a fortnight or so because he's sick.
Surely if bubs is sick you wouldn't take them out and about, especially where you know they will be playing with other kids ??
Is there is any guidelines with playgroups nsw that suggests you don't take sick kids to playgroup ?
Is there anyone at playgroup nsw that I should possibly contact ? Or should it be bought to the mother's attention by our organiser of our specific group ?
I mean it's the same thing as if you would send your sick kid to pre-school or big school ?

I am sorry don't know the laws for NSW, but you would think a little common sence from the other parents would come into play. Not only for the other children but why would any mother risk there baby getting worse...

I'm so sorry I can't give much advice but wanted to reply because I don't think that it sounds right?! I live in NZ its a guidline for my playcentre and playgroup not to bring sick kids along, and if they are sick with something contagious you have to call and let the other mummies know so they can keep a look out for their children. You should def find out what can be done, cause its not right! Good luck

Im sorry, but i too dont know much about nsw laws, but honestly, what kinda parent takes their sick child anywhere (unless doctors of course) lol,...but perhaps talking to the group coordinator will find you some more information, or perhaps setting some guidelines together that thewhole group can then follow?
I too would think that they as a organisation should have better rules etc about this kind of thing, after all its a similar thing as childcare/kindy/preschool...
My ds goes to playgroup too, and lately he has had such a run of bad luck with colds, flus, pnuemonia that personally i dont want to take him ANYWHERE!!!!!!

Yeah but it's wearing out mum at the same time, and not to mention the extra cost of medicine all the time.

I don't know if there are official guidelines (other than common sense) but I would talk to your dayleader or coordinator and if that doesn't get anywhere I would then talk to the coordinator of your zone. If you are having a problem, chances are other mothers are also.

this is a pet hate of mine!
Yesterday at the shops we over heard a mum with a 4 yer old and a baby saying how her older child has chicken pox and she hopes the baby doesn't get it, she said "its okay though its not contagious til the blisters pop" WTF!!!! What a stupid woman! Needless to say we walked away from her very quickly.
DS has only been sick twice and both times i didn't take him out of the house (except to the chemist once) as i didn't want to infect anyone elses children, its just pure common senc=se and courtesy.
I think that there are a lot of very selfish mothers who couldn't care less about anyone elses children.

That is just so unresponsible! I'm supprised that the poeple running the playgroup haven't said something!:shame:
Gees i would never even concider taking DS out to playgroup or anywhere for that matter if he was really sick like that.
Maybe you should speak to the people who rus the playgroup? I know that at the playgroup i used to go to there were rules stating that if i child is sick then they are not allowed to attend  if it's just a common cold then that was fine by their rules.
Grrrr people like that realy bug me :banghead:
I believe it's very irresponsible for a parents to expose their sick kids to other kids. DS caught a bug from another kid at playgroup. He ended up with ear infection, chest infection and not to mention fever and cold.
We've missed a couple of birthday parties when DS had a cold etc. How hard is it to keep your little ones at home till their get better? It's also for their own good.

It's p!ss me off, too..
From my personal experience, some of the mothers in my playgroup said to me 'well, I just think it's better to be outside rather than just stay at home. Maybe the fresh air will make them better'. And I'm like 'and sharing their cold or whatever to my son?'. I didn't really say it tho'. Nevertheless, we hardly go to playgroups anymore. We don't go nowhere pretty much when ds' sick, except to doctor..

No, i am pretty sure there are no laws regarding this. Why not talk to the person in charge and maybe they can write up a sickness policy etc. Or ring Playgroup NSW about it.
I have not been to Playgroup in about 6 weeks due to Flu season, cause there is always 1 who brings a sick kid. The excuse is always "Oh, he is getting over it OR its just a runny nose":banghead: :hair:

it bugs me too.
i would never take DD around other children when she is sick for 2 reasons.
i dont want the other children to get it
and if she is sick then she needs to rest not go out and play.
actually today my DD is walking around asking if we can go see my neice and nephew...she is going on and on about it...we are not going becuase i have a bit of a cold.
i guess it really shows how much people think of others
Don't get me started! :hair:
One lady brought her kid to playgroup and mentioned how the child had thrown up 4 times the night before. Every person who was there that day, and their entire families ended up with gastro... including ours. A few dads were ready to form a lynch mob.
