Hi there i would recommend it, i am a single mum of five and i found the work load not too much to handle. i was able to do it on my own time when the kids were occupied, go for it i was so glad once i started the first module i knew that it was right.

hey there,:)
i have just signed up for a Doula Course. So i can not tell you how it is but i can tell you there are a few schools you can study with.
I would GOOGLE the word 'Doula' and see what comes up.
As far as i have seen there are two schools people seem to choose.
Optimum Birth
and
Child birth International
Go to these sites and check them out.
You can take your time studying or do it faster -it is all up to you.
For CBI -Apart from the theory you have to attend 2 births and attend a Child Birth Class.

Once you have done that - you are qualified.

There are loads of options and upgrades if you want to further your study in the future.
Most people dont do it as a means to make money but to help people have the best birth possible and ofcourse once you are qualified you get paid for it as there is a large amount of your time invested before, during and after the birth.

Good luck!!!

Im a younger mum and have 3children under 4, and i study through childbirth international, and love it, there isnt any time limits placed on you, so you could take years or months what ever is for you, and there is a great student yahoo site when you join, that you can chat and run ideas past other students

highly recommend it, i love it

I too am studying with childbirth international. And agree with Jasmine that it's great! I have chatted to her on the yahoo site just recently! I have 3 children, the oldest is 4 and my youngest is 4 months. So i can work around my kids and when i have time to study i do!

I am up to writing my first assignment at the moment. I am loving it so far, I highly recommend it!

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, I am expecting no.4 at the moment, but I just love the idea of being a positive influence on a birthing mother. I love the whole birth process and have really enjoyed all my births(sounds odd I know). :)

Isnt it strange that saying you enjoyed birth is odd. Horror stories tho are the norm.

i really enjoyed my last 2births and that's why i became a doula. To enjoy birthing a 11pounder without so much as even grazing and back home within 6hrs is a birth experience all women should get the chance to enjoy.

I really cant wait to hear those words, that in some way i have helped another mum have a good birth, and maybe birth her best birth.

look forward to getting to know you better.
Jasmine - also looking forward to seeing how being a doula effects the birth of your 4th

Yeah I know, enjoying giving birth shouldn't be strange, it should be one of the most rewarding, exhilirating experiences we as women have.

Wow 11 pounds, thats amazing and so good to hear that it was enjoyable.

I can't wait to receive my first manual :)
