View Full Version : Feb mummas - Melb meet thread
Hels*Bels
06-09-2007, 03:56 PM
This thread is where we organise meets for the Feb mumma's in Melbourne.
Please do not post any location details as they will be sent by PM, thanks.
The next meet is on Thurs 13th at Juzzy's place. We will meet for lunch and please arrive between 11am-12pm. Bring a plate of food with you for lunch and keep it limited to finger foods, eg sandwiches, dips & biccies, cakes, chips, soft drinks, lollies etc. as this is easier.
I have PM'd the girls who are listed below with the address. Please use this thread to post what you are bringing (so we don't double-up) and also whether or not you are attending. That way the host (Juzzy) can check here the day before the meet to check on numbers etc. I won't be chasing people by PM's to see who is going, so it's advisable to subscribe to this thread. You can do this by selecting the thread tools above and it's a good idea to set an email alert so you know when the thread has been updated.
Ok, now that is out of the way... please copy and paste the list below to advise (next to your name) what food you are bringing. :)

It's at Jeff's shed 19th-21st October..maybe we could go on the Friday?
You can print off a free ticket from the front page of bubhub
Thoughts?? :)

I'll happily go to the Pregnancy and Babies expo... and Friday would be good for me too because I generally work most weekends.
Juz - I've been giving this some serious thought today... and I think I will come to your place for the meet on Thursday. I'm feeling much better now, so there's no point sitting around my house feeling very sorry for myself.
I have no idea what I will bring foodwise though...

Hi girls,
Thanks for the invite last week to your get-together. Unfortunately you meet on the exact fortnights that I meet with my mothers group so I won't be able to make it. How long have you guys known each other? You all seem to get along great, it's quite a little network you have. Did you start out in the pregnancy due date threads? An ex colleague of mine is 4 or 5 months pregnant and I'm thinking of telling her of BubHub as she would love it I'm sure.
Anyway, have a great time on Thursday :)

I'm going to attempt to leave here at 9am... so as to get there around 11ish. According to Google Maps... its something like 100kms from my house to Juzzy's... you'd never believe that we live in the same city huh?? ;)

Hi guys... I made it home in one piece!
Thanks for a great day, and thanks for hosting Juz (and for the cheesecake... must have recipe/link). Did I end up leaving anything behind like I usually do? I have a reputation in that department.
And I must apologise for Liam's screaming at the start. Glad he settled down after a while. He slept all the way home, which was great. Oh, and I think he must have been taking notes from the other bubs... he is currently on his tummy trying to wriggle his bum in the air. I'm not ready for crawling!
I remembered to look at the clicker thing before I left for home and it is 88 km from my house to Juz's. Took one hour exactly there (which is much less than I thought!), and one hour ten minutes home as I got stuck in a bit of traffic after the domain tunnel.
Was lovely to see some new faces too. I hope you both are able to come next time as well.
Hels... are we going to make a new thread and open it up to the Melb Jan-Mar Mums as well? A official meet organiser I think this falls under your official duties.

Juz - Thanks for hosting our meet today... and thankyou so much for the delicious birthday cake (well, cheesecake) that you made... it was so sweet of you (and oh so yummy !!!).
I got home about 6:45pm... so I think that it took me about 2 hours all up (thanks to Hels for letting me follow). I did make a wrong turn though... somehow... somewhere... at some time... I ended up on the Tullamarine Freeway (instead of the Ring Road)... so I ended up taking the back road to Craigieburn (which is probably quicker anyway). I was pretty tired by the time I got to the Tulla Freeway... and I was obviously concentrating so hard trying to hear Kyle and Jackie O on Fox over Kaelan screaming his little lungs out... so I completely missed the Ring Road exit... infact, I didn't even realise that I'd gone the wrong way until I drove past the actual airport *LOL*
I'm so blonde sometimes... or maybe it's the old age kicking in !! :D

If everyone wants to do that then yes I don't see why not? Maybe those who weren't at the meet today could share their thoughts?
Ok, a few changes are being made to the way the meets are structured, so I'll post in bold so it doesn't get missed;
It's pretty much been decided to hold the house meets once a month instead of fortnightly. Most of us feel that we are more prepared to make the effort to go if it's less frequent. And we will all take a turn at hosting to make it fair for everyone.
So, the alternate fortnight is still going to be a meet-up but something more local like at a shopping ctr, cinema, lunch venue, picnic in a park etc. So maybe the girls on the northside want to arrange something amongst themselves and same goes for the southside girls. Everything can be posted in here and anyone is welcome to come along regardless of where they live, so it's not an "us and them" type of thing, just trying to reduce the travelling distance for everyone.
So, the southside girls are talking about a cinema meet next week at either Chadstone or Southland... more details will follow.
The next house meet will be on THURS 11th Oct, Sandy are you able to host that one?

Happy to host next meet - and l'm happy to drive pretty much anywhere... especially if its alternating so that every second one is a reasonable distance - everyone is making an equal effort to attend...
As for opening the meets up a bit -- l'm really unsure about that - happy to go with the majority - but as the babies get older they will need more space to run about - l am concerned it is going to start getting awfully crowded - making it difficult to have meets at our houses - and just as difficult to arrange meets out and about...
I have a fairly large mothers group and whilst its fun - we have our meets in a hall where there is plenty of space... seeing how the older kids get around so quickly.... l just don't know
Juz - is that your famous toblerone cheesecake l see in those pictures????

I am in two minds about opening up the meets a little. Sounds like a great idea in theory but Sandy does have a good point. As the babies get bigger and more mobile they are going to need more room and what not.
As for the cake in the pics, it was triple choc Sandy, decided to do something different!
i had such a good time! thanks for letting me come, everyone, and thanks juz for hosting and the awesome cake.

Thanks to those of you who replied about expanding the meets to include jan-mar members.
It seems to be a concern about having too many people at each other's houses. At the moment we have 10 of us including the 2 new girls. I happen to agree that this is enough.
So what I propose is that we keep things as they are and only open up the meets that are at a social venue, eg a park ot playgroup etc... what does everyone think?
Just for the record, I have tried this before and for one restaurant meet I invited about 20 people by PM and we ended up with only 6 of us regulars!!
Here are some upcoming dates to jot in your diaries;
Next thurs 20th Sept is a meet at Hoyts cinema, Chadstone. It's a mum and bubs session showing "Hairspray" and starts at 10.15am. I'll have to confirm the session time this week. Most likely will be followed by a spot of lunch and some shopping. Everyone is welcome :)
Thurs 11th Oct is a house meet at Sandy's place for lunch (address details to follow closer to the date)
Friday 19th Oct is a meet at Jeff's shed for the Baby expo. More details will be worked out closer to the time (thanks for the suggestion Lauren  )
Thurs 8th Nov - I was going to pencil in Williamstown for lunch on this date. It is Melb cup week, but I don't think that will affect things too much.
There is a gap of 3 weeks between the cinema meet and Sandy's house. This is because it is school holidays and the mum & bub session won't be on. If anyone has any ideas about doing something in that gap, please post it here... maybe a shopping centre catch up or lunch somewhere?

I completely agree that we should keep the meets at peoples houses to only our Feb group... it's gonna start to get crazy soon once our little cherubs start crawling !! (*so* looking forward to that... not !! :D )
However, I think we could possibly explore the option of inviting the January and March Melbourne mums to some of the meets at public places... and as far as I know, this would only equate to only a few extra people anyway (I think there are only two Melbourne mums in the March group for example).
Anyways, something to consider... but I'll happily go along with whatever the majority think.

I agree Penny - I think that might be a nice idea, especially with the warmer weather coming soon- we can hopefully meet outdoors a lot more. I also agree with the majority that opening the house meets to others would be impossible given that the bubs are soon going to need lots more space (take it from me - now Eloise is cruising around our house suddenly seems to small for her!!) :)

Thanks Hels for doing that - great idea to put a bit of a schedule together!
I like the idea of going to see Hairspray - l have a physio appt. that day - if l can swap it l will come - gotta remember to try and swap it on Monday though!!!
Count me in as a probable!
I wouldn't mind opening up the public meets to other mums - as long as it isn't going to cause extra work for Helen... its not fair for her to have to chase up people if we are meeting at restaurants... or if we are relying on people to bring stuff to parks etc.

Juz and I (and maybe others?) have birthdays at the start of October. Maybe we could use that as an excuse to celebrate! :D
I'm hoping to come to the movies on Thursday but not sure if I can make it to Chaddy by 10am. Are we pre-booking tickets or just buying them when we get there?
Hels*Bels
16-09-2007, 10:44 AM
Mon - I think we should buy the tickets when we get there and that way no one is obligated if they can't make it at the last minute. I don't think it will all that busy. We can aim to meet at the cinema's at 10am. But I will double check the times when the schedule comes out this week.
Juz - I am coming, so long as I don't have a nasty headache :fingerscrossed:
Sandy - Thanks for thinking of me but I don't chase anyone anymore as the idea is for everyone to post in here what they are doing. I only PM the private details (eg address) and everything else goes in here. So I think it should work out fine.
When we have the Williamstown meet, I'll do a separate thread for it. I always under-book restaurant numbers to allow for those who don't turn up.
We're off to buy a new computer today, wish us luck! :o

Juz - I'm coming too (hopefully).
What do you think to Mon's idea of celebrating the upcoming birthdays? I was thinking about a picnic meet... do you think the weather is good enough yet? I suppose we really have to wait until it's a few days away to decide.
I was going to suggest St Kilda beach or Albert Park lake for a picnic lunch and then a walk, what do you think? Or can anyone think of something else? Also, what day do you want to have it on?
We bought a new PC yesterday (through DH's business). It has a 19' widescreen monitor which will be nice, although it's not set up yet. I hope it improves the cr@ppy network connection that we have at the moment.

Sounds great! Be fun for the bubs to roll/crawl/sit on the grass.
I can do anyday except Mondays :)

I agree - that sounds lovely..some outdoors spots for a picnic. Albert Park or the Botanical gardens (think that was suggested before) are nice. St Kilda is great (and from a purely selfish point of view it's near me, ha ha) but it can be a bit busy/feral! If it's to celebrate birthdays how about the birthday girls come up with some ideas?! :D

i was hoping to go out for dinner or something. I havent had anytime without Cassidy since she was born so leaving her with DP for the night would be nice. There are some nice restaurants in the Chadstone/Oakleigh area but i know this doesnt suit everyone. Ill just do what the majority want

Well let's have a few more ideas in the mix and then we can all decide :)
What date are the upcoming birthdays? Maybe when we know some dates we can work out a good day to start with.
I'm always happy to go out for dinner, but I'm not available for the next 3 weekends. However, it doesn't worry me if you want to arrange something during that time.

Someone told me that the walk around The Tan at the Botanical Gardens is great. I haven't done it so I'm not sure how long and/or strenuous it is. Maybe we could combine a meet with some exercise? I'm sure there is a cafe there too so we could reward our walking efforts afterwards.
Also, there is a big pram walk thing coming up soon. Could be a goer if anyone is interested.

I don't think I'm going to make it to the movies on Thursday. Real shame as I'd love to see Hairspray. Are all the bub sessions on first thing? It's just the early time that is a problem.
Purplebird

Mon I've only ever been to mums and bubs sessions round here and the times have varied, anytime from 10am - 12 ish start. I'm sure most cinemas have these sessions at various times so we could try looking at different places for another day in the future?
i like the idea of doing the tan track - would it suit prams though? I thought it was more of a jogging track (there are always heaps of runners on it so we might not be popular with them!). Otherwise, the gardens are lovely anyway so theres plenty of walking round there - and there is a cafe or 2.
The world's greatest pram stroll would be good as well.
Oh, and I'm always up for dinner out-wherever. I'm only familiar with places on the South side or the city (have lots of experience of eating out if anyone wants ideas around there!), but I'm also happy to travel.

Mon - most of the mums & bubs sessions are first thing in the morning - l guess its their way of filling the early sessions... but most cinema's do it - so perhaps another time we can do one on the other side of the city - highpoint / sunshine / yarraville maybe???
I have changed my physio appointment to Friday - so all going well l will be there - l am always nervous about committing to early engagements... not sure what to do about Coen's sleep - l might take off when he is due and let him sleep in the car... the problem is he will need solids when he wakes up... l guess l can figure it out...
the pram stroll sounds good! I'm up for it - and l am also up for combining a walk with a meet...
sounds like a great idea to celebrate the upcoming birthdays - what about somewhere at fed square?

I have fed Liam solids when I'm out and about. Usually I put the pram so he is sitting upright, but if he isn't in the pram I can feed him sitting in my lap, although it is trickier.
I've heard that the lighting at the bubs movie session is dimmed, not completely dark, so you should still be able to see.
icugal
18-09-2007, 09:24 PM
As DF and I are out and about fairly often in the mornings, I'm forever feeding K his solids whilst sitting in his pram (eg whilst getting our taxes done, meeting with finance people, in shopping centers, at people's houses... I have no shame :D ). Infact, I think Kaelan has had more "take-away' solids in his pram than he has in his high-chair at home.
Poor kid gets dragged around everywhere with us :)
harleyq
19-09-2007, 07:31 AM
Yeah you're right not sure what l was worried about really - l have taken solids with me everywhere as well - but the difference is l usually knew where l was going, so knew where l could stop and feed... but hey its a shopping centre - there is gonna be a cafe ... or two...:D

I just rang Hoyts at Chadstone to double check for tomorrow.
They have actually stopped doing the mum and bubs sessions. However, they did say that many mums do still come with their bubs and they have room for the prams etc. That being the case, there are later sessions of Hairspray starting at 11.10am or 12.45pm. So we could make it later and which will be better for everyone from the sounds of it... what do you think?
The person I spoke to didn't think it would be very busy tomorrow and now that the bubs are older we don't really need to worry about childproof rooms etc.
I'm not sure if I can make it as I have Reece's MCN appt tomorrow. I thought it was next week :banghead: . I rang to try and change it and they are going to get back to me later, so I'll update again when I know.

The botanical gardens sounds good for a picnic lunch and walk. Is everyone flexible to do it at the last minute depending on the weather? It can either be next thurs or the following one. If we leave the days free, then it can be decided a couple of days before.
Juz - Your suggestion of where to meet tomorrow sounds fine, we just need to decide on the session time.
Can we do the dinner meet for your birthday after 7th Oct? I'll be on holidays until then and I'd really like to come along.

Hels id like the try for an earlier session so we can fit in some shopping and try to avoid major traffic dramas on the way home, so if it is ok with everyone else id like to try for the 11.10 session and make the meet up time say 10.30.
What does everyone else think?

Welcome to my world for the last 7 days !!! Kaelan woke up with a cold last Wednesday and is still going, though nearly better (except for his runny nose... I've never seen a baby go through so many tissues !!!). I got my cold Friday night which has now progressed to my chest (also improving).. and DF got sick on Sunday and has just had the last two days of work. Needless to say, we haven't been a healthy household.
Hope you guys get better soon... we'll miss you at the meet tomorrow (assuming that I'm there myself of course !! :D ). I wanted to show you the latest nappy I've made... oh well, another time perhaps.

Hi girls
Hope everyone is having a nice weekend?
I thought we should have a show of hands for the Expo meet at Jeff's shed this friday?
We also need to arrange a meeting place. I suggest the area where you would normally buy the tickets, which is usually right outside the main entrance :p
Most of you are planning to get there at 10am. For those who will be later, please make sure you have someone's mobile number so you can txt when you get there.
Could we start a list with your name and the time you expect to get there?

Must have missed that post. All good then. Carry on!

I will be there this Thursday at Hannah's. Sounds good. Are we posting what everyone is bringing? I'll bring something savoury (not sure yet, maybe savoury muffins as a finger food).

Hannah, that's cool. The problem I have is that I am involved with 3 playgroups. This one, 1 that I have been going to for years and my twin one. 1 of them is weekly, this is fortnightly and the other is monthly. So I try and go dedicate a different playgroup each week. so sometimes I may not be able to catch up but if I know who's hosting then if anything changes I can pm the night before and get the details.
I will try and post if I can make it before so that it is less confusing for all.
Have a great day though...

I don't know if I'm just over tired (have just gotten out of bed)... but when I read that Mon was bringing her dip, I started drooling !! :)
I'll have to give some thought as to what I'll bring.

Penny - how about bringing some fruit? We always say we should eat something more healthy. Easy to do as well. Just an idea.
i'm in, looking forward to it as usual (mm, dip..)
not sure what to bring yet, but i'll think of something sweet i suppose?

Sandy - RicottaPastizzi (Hannah would it be okay to cook in your oven??? about 40 min? otherwise l could pre-cook here and we eat them cold)
I couldn't make Wednesday either - silly me - suggest a meet and then forget to put in my diary and organise something else!!!

Yes of course you can use my oven Sandy - although you might recall it's cr@p and has a habit of going out (I think it was made in the 70s - the 1870s that is!), but we can watch it and make sure it's on. DH says we aren't allowed a new one until I decide where we are going to live

We will be getting there around lunchtime tomorrow. As Reece needs to have his sleep and solids before we leave.

BUT
What time are we all supposed to be getting to Hannahs?

I have a bit of a conundrum.
I only realised last night that the Statewide stop-work meeting is on tomorrow afternoon at Festival Hall. Being as Eastern Health seems to be the specific target of pay cuts and harrassment from hospital management (Herald Sun mentions this)... I almost feel obliged to show my support to my colleagues (as I am an employee of an Eastern Health Hospital).
It's just wrong how nurses are being treated right now. It seems the government is more concerned with punishing nurses than trying to actually resolve the dispute... but anyways, that's a whole other post.
I don't know what to do... on one hand I really want to attend the meet-up with you guys, but on the other hand I want to do my part to help win this battle.
I'm going to have to give this more thought

Ok - a few things...
Anytime at all is fine, shall we say from 10.00 like last time?
Penny - that's a tricky one, sorry I can't help, but as an ex-nurse I can totally empathise on the work issues so I would have the same conundrum...you can decide last minute - see how you feel tomorrow?
Lauren - don't stress at all, you don't need to bring anything...just yourself and Jack :)
We have a newbie joining us, hope that's OK with everyone - she is another Feb mumma and is really keen to meet other mummies (she doesn't have a Mother's Group). I met her on *ahem* another forum and she's great - I do hope nobody minds...(please let me know if you do).
And one last thing...please don't look at my blinds, they're sooo dusty :o :D

I think that's great, especially if she doesn't know many people with bubs the same age. The more the merrier :)

WTF? I bet they are not as dirty as my windows ;)
I am baking muffins ATM for tomorrow, the whole house smells like a bakery... yum! DH has been hovering around the kitchen, but I told him to bug off!

At this stage I think we're coming. My problem with going to the nurses meeting is that I'd have to take Kaelan with me and that idea is not very appealing.
Unfortunately I was relying on Kaelan to wake me up early this morning so that we could make na early start... but of course, he chose today to sleep in... so we didn't get up until 9am.
Needless to say, we won't be there at 10am :)

Thank you so much for today everyone!!! I had a wonderful time as always... sorry to just rush out like that - but poor Coen couldn't keep his eyes open... as l said he fell asleep before l had even left the driveway... poor thing - he seems in good spirits though!
Big thanks to Hannah & Eloise for playing hosts (you make a mean cup of tea Hannah)... food was great....
I was wondering if we might throw out a challenge for next meet... what do you think about everyone bringing something healthy for our next meet at Mon's??? It would mean that we would have to get fairly inventive... but could be good???
Drive home was fairly good...
heheh, i guess that would be a good idea; although, the food today was yummo

Excellent, excellent idea  I know lots of us are trying to get in shape so it would be helpful not to be tempted...then again today's food was luffly - ah, the cheesecake!
