I want to start TT DS in a couple of weeks. First of all, I'm going to sit him on the toilet a couple of times a day, show him how Mummy does it and get all excited so on ans so forth.
I do have a potty on layby, it's one of thise fancy song ones. I'm actually wondering should I rather get an attachment for the toilet rather than a potty?
I've always made a point of leaving the toilet door open when I go to the toilet so he can get 'interested' (ok, so TMI) and only when no-one's there, deh!!! So, is getting a potty going to confuse him? Should I get a toilet seat attachment instead? What are your thoughts, opinions and experiences with this?

i think every childs different really older dd only liked the potty, ds did both quiet happily and dd went straight on the toilet with one of those inserts that sits under the lid. I just bought a little step from safeway, she needs help getting on and off but she hates the potty for some reason

For us, Ronan started off thinking that the toilet was fantastic. He'd use it in the morning and just before a bath in the evening.

But now that he's actually begun running around in just jocks (for about 10 days now) he has decided that the toilet is awful and he won't go near it. I feel that somehow he's become a tad intimidated by it (despite all the praise/rewards etc he used to get) and it makes him feel insecure.

So I went and got a $15, high-back traditional style potty (wasn't going to blow a heap of $$ on something he mightn't like) that has been fantastic and he's fine with it. I never wanted to use one (and especially not in the lounge room :o ) but I had to put those reservations aside and go with what he felt most comfortable with. It's such a huge learning experience for them. I'd encourage you to do the same- just play it by ear. If he wants a potty, then potty it is!

My 2 went straight onto the toilet - I just bought one of the $5 seat inserts at Big W for them.

I hate potties - I hate cleaning them, so I didn't want the kids to use one.

i did the toilet, no potty. ds was 1.5 when we started and by 2 he was fully day trained and starting on nights.

mind you we did have quite a few boys stay with us (twin cousins and a friend with 4 boys who went into labour) so he watched the big boys, arched his back and peed on the floor right next to the toilet like them! we knew he was ready and just started to sit him on it and leave a step stool next to the toilet too.

good luck either way

I did the whole expensive song potty too. DS1 wasn't interested in the song though! He used the potty for quite a few months before progressing onto the toilet.
DS2 however, didn't want anything to do with the potty though as his brother was using the toilet. He started straight away using the toilet with one of those toilet seat thingys with steps, for kids. He was fully trained by the time he was 26 months.
Good luck!
