Hi
Is engin worth getting if you only make mostley local calls and a few STD calls? I have broadband already set up. I have also heard that there can be a lot of noise or static in the lines. Does this happen often?

Hi 3KIDSMUM,
It most cases yes it is worth it. If you have ADSL broadband then you are still required to maintain your landline and pay line rental to your landline provider. Most people are generally paying approx $30 per month for line rental with a few perks. With most landline providers you can actually drop your line rental down to approx $20 per month. Your call rates will increase but you then use Engin for your outgoing calls so the rate increase from your landline provider for landline calls wont really matter. This also allows you to still receive calls on your existing phone number as you are keeping your landline. Then engin's Monthly service fee starts at $9.95 per month. That gives you 10cent untimed local and national calls. There is no such thing as STD calls in the Engin world. 27 cents per minute for mobile calls with NO flag fall (connection fee) and international calls from 3.5 cents per minute and engin to engin free.
Or you could choose the new $14.95 National plan wich gives you FREE local and national call. 22cent per minute mobile calls (no flag fall) International from 3.5 cents per minute and engin to engin free.
Although this could work out to have the same fixed monthly cost that you are paying now it gives you the advantage of cheap and/or free calls so you can make many more calls.
In regards to the quality issues you are referring to ther are a number of things that can cause quality issues. eg: broadband speed, Modem/router not compatible. generally if you are a home user with 1 or 2 computers you will require a min adsl download and upload speed of 512/128. If you have Cable broadband then generally your are fine.
The modems that are generally not compatible with Voice over IP (Voip) are the Siemens Speedstream and Speedtouch Modems due to firewalls.
If you have the right equipment and the right broadband speed then the quality is the same as a landline call or even better.
Please let me know what type of broadband you have, make and model number of modem, Make and model of router (if you have one) and Broadband speed and i will be more than happy to let you know what you require.
Kind regards,
Andrew
