I went into my the birth of my secound baby with every intention of "going it naturally". Tom (my first) was a forceps, epidural affair - but a very very postive one at that I must add.
Anyhoo, Molly was due on 13 August and my waters broke at 10.30pm on 12 August. We phoned the hospital, called mum to let her know to come over to our house as she was looking after Tom and after a cup of tea and some hurry ups from mum and hubby Mark we got to the hospital at 12.10am.
My contractions slowed right down, not much was happening so our midwife said off to bed and we'll see you sometime in the morning. I love when they say - have a panadol and get some sleep... I paced the room for about 20 minutes and decided that the contractions had picked up again enough and I didnt want to wait for them to become more intense before heading back to the birthsuite. So off we went and I got strung up to monitors and blood pressure gadgets and wotnot and our midwife did the first internal - 4, maybe 5cm dilated. Oh dear, I decided I wasnt going to be able to last for a few more hours as the contractions were now taking my breath away a bit, so I caved and asked for an epidural. The aneathatist arrived a little bit later (poor man was raked out of bed...) and by now I was getting a bit vocal. He popped a needle in my hand for the drip and had me sit up on the edge of the bed and lean over a pillow. As he started to wash my back down ready for the epidural I had an almighty contraction and started to do some good and proper yellling. Before I could catch a breath Molly just started to slide out. I said "baby coming" and leaned over sideways as I felt her head moving down. The midwife said something that sounded like, now sit back up! Sit up! I thought, far out, I'm sitting on her head! I think she must have realised then that Mol really was en route and helped Mark encourage me to slow down my breathing and not push. I dont remember pushing. One more contraction and I felt her head slip out, then a small break and one final contraction and out shot Molly at 2.26am. Just four short hours from waters breaking I had my drug free birth (okay, I sucked on the gas for about 3 contractions, but frankly the stuff just made me feel horrible)
My beautiful, clever little girl arrived without a scratch or dent on her and I got my natural birth in the end.
I'd like to send out respect and gratitude to the wonderful nurses and midwives who took care of us - especialy Kaylene, the middie who caught the speeding Molly.
