Just interested in your veiws on this...

for once (:p ) I don't want a war started

Do you beleive in male circ but not female?

Or the other way around?

Or not at all. (I choose this one! )

I'm meaning voluntary Circumcision here, not medical nessisity.

Poll coming..................

i dont believe in any of it....however in saying that if someone chooses to circumsize their boy then thats their decision not going to go sick at them for it! As for girls well thats just wrong :(

I believe neither is ok on babies. If the person involved wants to do that to themselves when they are older then I have absolutely no problem with it :)

I believe neither is ok theres no need for it I think we should leave our babies genitals the way they are

I dont believe that boy or girl circ is ok..

But I dont judge other parents who decide to get their child circumsized as its their choice.. nothing to do with me:)

Scalpels and genitals are never a good mix IMO and should be kept apart in all possible cases.

To me female and male circumcision are the same thing.

There is another thread going at the moment about female circumcision and most people are in an uproar however half of them are pro-RIC for boys. I cant see any difference between the two except one is acceptable in Australian society and the other is not.

I strongly oppose both and I find it hypocritical to support one but not the other.

Yeah that was my whole point sellarella - glad you said that

Almost everyone who replied to that thread was in uproar, and I really found that hypocritical - why is ok to circ a boy but not a girl?

They are one and the same to me.

So? an "expert"came on 60mins and said that it helps prevent HIV and cervical cancer in women....what a crock!

I beleive in most cases uncirced penises get infected cos they aren't being cleaned properly.

Hmmm to clean or to cut...answer seems blindingly obvious to me

But in saying that I know that in general parents are only doing what they think best:)

I agree with Stellarella 100%.

niether, its a choice to be made when that child is an adult, not by a parent when the baby has no rights to its own bits

Well, I am pro-choice for parents knowing what is best for their own children.
Dont attack me when i am simply putting my opinion forward.

I'm not attacking you :)
I'm just clarifying your response.
So you dont believe it is the choice of the child, the owner of the penis. You believe it is the choice of the parent to decide the future of a sons genitals, and ultimtately the health of his sex life?

SugarBlossom
03-09-2007, 11:26
so thats not pro choice then is it tjfaz85??

As you have taken away your sons choice.

Not attacking here...but just don't think you understand what pro choice actually means

:)

She has already explained several times her reasoning. The definition of 'pro choice' is not the subject of this thread.

Let's move the discussion forwards please, and keep to the topic of the opening post.

I guess this is an issue that alot of people will just never see eye to eye about.

Yep I agree.
Thanks for clarifying. :)

I believe my children have a right to choose what happens to their own body.

For me I don't feel I have the right to make the decision.

I believe there IS a difference between female and male circumcision.

The consequences of female circumcision are usually severe in terms of pain, infection, scarring, painful sex, painful childbirth (more than usual), infertility, incontinence...

As far as I am aware, the above consequences are rare for male circumcision.

IMO a parent choosing circumcision for a female is choosing for their child a life of pain and suffering. A parent choosing circumcision for a male is not.

That's how I see the difference, anyway.

Depends which form of female circumcision you are talking about. In many cases, the form is akin to the male circumcision counterpart: just the removal of the clitoral hood. The damage is exactly the same as that done by removal of the foreskin.

Same i think it's wrong if they want to have it done they should make that choice when they are old enough that's my opion anyway

shelle65

From my research I understand that removal of the clitoral hood is the least common form of FGM, and excision (type 2) is much more common, which does lead to severe problems. When I hear reference to female circumcision, I think of the most common form, which is very different to the most common form of male circumcision.

Does that mean Type I FGM is acceptable? While it may not be the most common, it is still practised and is the predominant form used outside African countries.

Beany, I never said any form of circumcision is acceptable (don't have a son so don't want to comment on the acceptability of male circumcision). All I am saying is that I see male circumcision and female circumcision as being different due to the difference in severity of the consequences in most cases. I don't think it is fair to say that a parent who circumcises their son has done something akin to female circumcision.

I don't believe in either

Beany
03-09-2007, 14:27
I believe it is completely fair to compare Type I FGM to the current standard practice of male circumcision. Not the other types, certainly, but the removal of foreskin and the removal of the clitoral hood are definitely comparable.

I would be interested in hearing from those of you who support male circumcision.

If hypothetically you were a baby boy, would you want YOUR parents to circumcise YOU or leave you as you are...Just curious?

shelle65
03-09-2007, 14:41
OK, I agree that Type 1 FGM and male circumcision are comparable. But I guess my point is that the connotations of "female circumcision" go much wider than type 1, so unless you are being specific about which type you are talking about, then they are not comparable. Hope that makes sense :)

It makes sense :) And I know the connotations of FGM are generally of the worst of the worst case scenario which was why I brought Type I into it.

People often forget that it's in degrees and varies across regions.

I believe (:p) neither is okay.

Lopping off babies skin is not normal to me, whether female or male. Why 'fix' something that wasn't broken to begin with. I rather teach my boys how to wash their privates properly than having them go through the pain of circumcision.

Havent heard what?
Not many 'support circs' will reply to these threads as it just starts getting nasty.
People are told their views are basically stupid. Even though everyone has different views on ever childhood issue. It is a bit harder when you are basically told you are a **** parent because of this situation.

PS- LAST POST!! (maybe...)
Yeah I agree with you there. It does get too nasty sometimes.
