View Full Version : who has dyed wool with food colour?
I found some instructions on the net that said to soak in half vinnegar half water for half an hour, then pour on the colour, and cook in microwave for 2 minutes on and 2 minutes off, until cooked for total of 6 minutes. I did that, and it worked great, I rinsed it until the water was pretty much clear, dried it and knitted with it. tonight, I soaked it to lanolise it, and the water was all colour, it even dyed the pink string that I had on it, now I am worried that it will stain my nappies when I use them as a soaker...

Sorry, I haven't used food dye (I use direct dyes) but I do know that Mel (Stellaj) uses food dye. It turns out beautifully so I am sure you will find a way to make it work too.
Maybe PM her if she doesn't see this thread. :)

That is so great. I read about some nuns in some forgotten convent doing this (obviously not in a microwave, but the method was similar) and the result was lovely and long wearing. This sort of thing puts my faith back into self-sufficiency. Well done for being brave enough to try it!!
lol, thanks, it turned out great, no two ways about that...

Food colour will always run a bit. I've found pink to be worse than the other colours for running for some reason
Even if it gets on your nappies it should wash out :)
My DH hates me dyeing wool this way because it stinks so much!! :D
it does stink... I do it during the week, when he is not home....
Does it really come out in the wash if it stains? guess I will find out lol
