Does anyone know how safe it is to have a rubella injection whilst pregnant? My doctor wants me to get a booster now---i am 5 weeks pregnant.....

You are not supposed to get the rubella vaccination during pregnancy, infact they tell you to wait 3 months after having a rubella shot before falling pregnant becuase it contains a live virus. Your doc obviously knows you're pregnant, yeah??

I agree.
I had a mumps, measles and rubella booster and the Dr stressed that I knew that I wasn't pregnant and couldn't start TTC for 3-6 months after it.
Yeah my doctor does know i am pregnant.......
I have been doing a few google searches and it all suggests that women should not be immunised whilst pregnant. The blood tests i got back showed that i am "boarderline". So i guess i am on the edge of being immune to it and not being immune. I dont know what my doctor was thinking (I only spoke to the secretary) but i have an appointment to see her next friday so i guess i will find out then. Dont think i will be getting a shot though, especially seen as though i am only "boarderline"......
I was told when pregnant with Daniel that I was no longer immune ... the doc didn't seem too worried and as I lived in a small town, told me that he would ring and let me know if there was an outbreak so i could avoid small children at the time!
There was not even the tiniest thought that he would immunise me while pregnant!

NO ! NO ! NO ! NO !
You cant be immunised while pg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rubella can cause many birth defects etc so the last thing you want is to have the vaccine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Id actually consider changing doctors as this one seems rather incompetent !
Its a case of them needing to know if your immunity is up or not so that it is managed eg. you are told if there has been an outbreak at the surgery or where you should avoid etc.
Sorry i cant even think properly im so gobsmacked that this doctor told you that you need this done
Aren't they injecting a live strain of the virus if they do that?
I was not immune with the last pregnancy but they weren't worried and they defiantley were not considering giving me a booster, in fact they gave it to me 2 days post birth in hospital before discharge.
I would not consent to it Ali.
Cheers Jen
Try 'definately' jen doh! its late...........:D

A friend of my sister had a rubella injection and didn't relise she was pregnant. The baby ended up with severe defects and she ended up having a termination. This girl never really got over it. They have never tried for another baby.

When I did all the blood tests at the start of my pregnancy my ruebella immunisation level also came back borderline. My OBGYN said not to worry and that she would gibe me a booster shot after the baby was born. The chances of getting measles are very tiny, and a borderline level probably still protects you, but if you do hear of an outbreak stear clear.
But DON"T get the shot whatever you do, and I agree with the others, I'd change doctors as this one's obviously hopeless and could have caused you lifechanging problems.

You know what is so scary about this, what if your doctor just went and got the vaccine and gave it to you without YOU knowing the concequences.
Change doctors quickly, I mean they are supposed to know about these things, its appalling.
Thank Goodness for Bub Hub

That's a big NO NO ... I was also borderline and was told that after I give birth I will be immunised again ... which I was and was told about 20 times by doc to make sure I dont fall pregnant within the next 3 months...
So definitely dont get it done...
