Hi there, a week ago my Dh and I got our nuchal and blood results back, we are in the high risk grup with an estimated risk of 1:66 that our baby will have downs syndrome. This result was mainly because of my blood wrk (bhcg was a little under the cut off and the PAPP-A was 0.2, with the cut off for DS being 0.4 (lower indicating a possible problem)) The actual nuchal was very good (1.7mm the cut off is normally about 3mm or higher).

So I guess I am just wondering how cncerned should we be with these results? Has anyone ever been in a similar situation and if so what were the outcome? This is our first pregnancy and we are both quite young 27 (me) and DH (26).

Thanks for you time and replies, we are just soo devistated and upset! :(

There's a lot to think about when faced with these results, isn't there.

I had a high risk result earlier this year- only 1:134 though. It too was triggered by the blood test and the scan looked good but as my Obs explained you do need to look at the 2 together.

For us I went ahead and had the amnio- we still prob would have gone ahead with the preg no matter what the results were but we wanted to be prepared.

As it turned out the amnio came back all clear and my baby was born just over 3 weeks ago and is absolutely perfect :)

I would suggest you talk to your Obs or Dr if you have further questions.

All the best with everything :hugs:

We've had the same scare. My nuchal fold/bloods/age ratio came back 1:97 (my bloods were fine but nuchal fold was 2.8mm). My carer put it into perspective saying to not let the result scare you - there could be contributing factors such as the test being done a little on the early side. You still have a 65 out of 66 chance of the baby being fine and that is very good when you look at it that way so try to focus on that until you make a decision on whether to pursue further testing. I chose to have an amnio the same as Kazza as apparently they are more accurate (99.9%) although there are very small risks with this test (1% only).
It is a very stressful time absorbing all this info and I'm thinking of you. Hope all is well in the end and you've been worrying over nothing too!! :hugs:

I wouldn't worry too much. I had two ultrasounds with my third son, because he nucal fold was 4mm, which is MASSIVE, both scans they said he was downs, my blood work was opposite.

I had an amnio, and he was perfectly normal. Sometimes these tests cause a lot of unecessary worry.

I wouldn't worry. But its always easy to say that, when you have hindsight. :hugs:

Hi There.. so many hugs to you.. IMO I would not be too worried (aware, but not worried) I reasearched alot earlier on in the year as we came back as 1:59 with Nuchal at 4.4mm.. Not real good.. I think we were 1:4 with nuchal alone, but bloods were good and brought the figure up.The genetic specialist we saw was very much a beliver of Nuchal being a hard sigh with the bloods as an additional soft sign.. So bad bloods + Good nuchal was MUCH better case senario than Bad Nuchal + good bloods. They can scan for additional sighns at 20 weeks (but obviously, if it would change your decsion to keep bubs you might want to know Abefore that.. Then there is Amnio or CVS which would tell you for sure)Its a scary time, I am sure you and bubs are fine, but you would not be human if you did not worry.. Thinking of you and many hugs

i had this scare with this pregnancy, i was told i had a 1 in 4 chance, high risk and i was pretty devastated but when the blood test came in it went back to low risk 1 in so many thousand. I was told that with the scan result the accuracy goes from 66 % correct to 95% when the blood test is added. But in your case it's the opposite so i don't know sorry :fingerscrossed: all is ok. I also got a second opinion and get just laughed at me he said im only 20 and have no history at all so my next scan is a bit scary but im sure all will be fine with bubs and same with you.

Hi Zara15,
I am in the same boat as you at the moment. My blood results have come back and put us in the high risk category when everything with the nuchal and ultrasound overall being good. I went and spoke to my GP about it, and he recommended I go and speak to a genetic counseller, which I have. I have made the decision to have an amnio, just to put my mind at rest if everything is okay or be prepared if it is not. I have a 3 week wait now until the amnio and although it is hard not to worry, I am trying my best. My thoughts will be with you as well and I hope that everything turns out well for you and your baby.

Thanks to everyone here who posted a reply with their experience, it has helped me feel better to know that others have been through the same thing and that everything turned out okay for them.

hi i too am in the same situation as a few of u and all i can say is i feel for you all its not a nice situation to be in and causes so much stress for whats hopefully going to be a good result for all of us

i went for my nt scan last week scan went well but just recieved the bad news today that im in higher risk catorgory(1 in 51) and have been offered further testing, i was origanilly having the cvs done but due to recurrent mcs im on aspirin so need to stop that 1 week b4 test which puts me at 15 weeks and can have the safer amnio test at 16 weeks so have opted the 2 agonising week wait to have that done will have prelim results in 2 days a yes or no which im relieved at

i have read up lots on here and the net and am confident due to scan results that everything will be ok, my nuchal was little bit higher at 2.4mm and the prescence of a nasal bone and correct limb length suggest not downs but i guess we just play the waiting game, and be positive positive positive!!!!

on the up side we get to find out earlier if its pink or blue so im holding onto that for hope but as i said earlier the power of being positive is a very strong thing its helped before so please all be strong :hugs:

Hi guys,

I'm having an amniocentesis next week for the same reason :( My results were borderline. We have three other kids and I had always sworn I would not care. However, my doctor pointed out that we need to make this decision as a family and with consideration to the other kids. I didn't want to even do the nuchal screening but everyone convinced me 'for peace of mind'. Now I am nervous about next week. It is good to hear so many 'happy' stories on this site! Sorry - I've made this about me - but it was a google search about the topic that brought me to this site and has lifted my spirits. Lets hope we all have great news in the next few weeks!

I know its been a long time since I posted this, truth be told I dont come on this site much... though I do appreciate all your replies!!

I was just wondering how everyone else went? Did you have the amnio? What was the result? Im happy to reprt that I had the amnio (not so happy about that) and the resutls were negative for downs. I now have a perfect 4mth old little man, he is just gorgeous!

Anyways I feel really bad that I didnt get your repiles, they would have been nice too cause this is the only site that anyone had any experience with the test results! I hope all worked out we ll for you and Id love to hear about your little bubba's :)

Just wanted to add my story in case others find this thread.

Our nuchal was 3.7mm and with blood tests we were 1:60 i think.

The drs were all very negative and it was extremely traumatic.

I had a cvs and got the results in a couple of days and all was normal. Despite this i had to have a lot of extra ultrasounds as the dr were looking for other problems like heart abnormalities.

The good news is that lily is 18 months now and absolutely perfect.

The bad news is as the drs were so negative i didnt really ever believe she was going to survive. I then ended up with PND.

Despite this i would have the nuchal test again.
