View Full Version : What's Scarborough and Canning Vale like?
We're moving to Perth soon and I was just wondering what Scarborough is like and also Canning Vale?
im not sure bout canningvale but scarborough is a nice area and is close to the beach which is always good
Scarborough is a beach side suburb with a mix of old larger style houses and smaller newer units and townhouses. Community wise it has a broad cross section - some families, some old people who've lived there for years and quite a few 20 somethings with no kids who like the beach lifestyle (My little brother, sister and a friend all live there - all 20 somethings - no kids).
Canningvale is mostly new estates - definately family lifestyle - some of the estates are stunning. It has two new primary schools and another one opening next year. Houses are pretty much standard 4x2's brick and tile. (A few of my friends have built in canningvale)
I'd say both are lovely but if you want other kids in your street I'd go with Canningvale.
Scarborough is fantastic - but pricier than Canningvale.
Canningvale is on the flats and has heaps of different estates. As the Freeway has been making a creep southwards, Canningvale has grown hugely. There is quite a variation in the different estates as well depending on when the different stages where offered up for sale. (Eg. Warratah and Livingstone were offerred for sale at the same time, and houses in Livingstone are more expensive than the ones in Warratah). Most of the estates are built on reclaimed swamp land which sounds gross, but they are really nice due to the estates being based around lakes in a lot of areas. (Names like Sanctuary waters, Ranford). Pretty good facilities too.
Scarborough is coastal, an older area than Canningvale, but a lot of the houses have been revamped to keep up with the times. Close to Perth, Canningvale can depend a lot on what's going on on the Freeway as to how quickly you get to Perth.
I probably made the first statement as I love coastal.:D
Canningvale is verrry nice:) Its a very compact suberb if you know what I mean - but the houses are lovely and its most certainly a very coveted area to live in. In the past year the prices of living there have skyrocketed and I mean HUGELY!! Its fast growing has beautiful estates, parks, ponds and fountains etc.
There is a shopping centre with everything and Maccas, H'J's & Chicken Treat all together - and about 6 min from there is a new Coles and other stores going up.
Canningvale is right near the freeway and is about a 20min drive to the city. About 15min from major Westfield Shopping Centre with cinemas and restaurants and every shop you could think of.
Hope that helps!
Thank so much for all your replies, it has been a huge help.
Regarding Scarborough, are there good schools in the area? I see there's a good play centre nearby in Osborne Park which will be convenient.
How far is the beach from Canning Vale? Canning Vale seems a little bit far out but the houses are brilliant there.
Also regarding areas, does anyone know which areas have the good kindy's and schools which are not too far away from the beach?
Sorry about all the questions but it's so daunting moving to a new city!!
Thanks a ton for all your help.
canningvale is quite a mission to the beach but is a fast growing area with lots of ncie young families and new schools and stuff. southern river, which is right next to cannigvale is a new estate, not too expensive and has lots of young families, and playgroups and kindys and schools - both private and public.
i LOVE scarborough, but not real condusive to families, small blocks and apartments and units and limited schools. but lovely and close to the beach and shops and stuff. i live down the road from there now. innaloo which is right next to scarborough is more set up for families and has more family like facilties.
whatever you choose i am sure you will be near enough to one of us and we can all help you settle in and find stuff!
Thanks to all of you, you've been a great help.
Will let you know how we get on.
If you go a little north of Scarborough you can get larger lots and still be close to the beach. You could go as far north as Hilarys and still be only 20 minutes from the CBD (non-rush hour). We lived at Padbury very cheaply, 5 minutes to the beach, 40 minutes to work in the morning including dropping at daycare, and seemed to be ok primary schools.
We live in C.Vale in Waratah Estate (first estate). Waratah and Livingston were both sold at the same time and eventhough Waratah is cheaper it's not on reclaimed land like Livingston. I love C.Vale and it's a beautiful and peaceful suburb to live in but I do agree prices have sky-rocketed in the past few years. My parents bought the first stage of Waratah and paid i think 68,000 for their land and now land (waratah has been subdivided again into another estate) and the land was sold for $208,000 for the same size blocks
We also live in Canning vale, in the Livingstone estate.
It is such a nice area round here. The school is good. DS goes to the day care here and he loves it (although this week he was playing too rough with the kids, pushing them over and sitting on them!)
Canning vale is pretty central located for everything, except the beach, I reckon it would be a fair drive
