View Full Version : oysters and listeria???
did anyone eat oysters when they were pregnant??
I'm 8 weeks and forgot I shouldn't eat them, does anyone know about the risks with listeria?
should i be worried??
no specific info here, but it's a risk of food poisoning you're worried about rather than something that's in every single oyster.
my friend with her 2nd pg was gobbling them down once, obviously that batch turned out to be okay.
so for this time, if you're okay, then breathe a sigh of relief and avoid them next time.
but i think if they're cooked and heated to a certain temp, it's ok - better google this to check.
Listeria is killed at 70 degrees, so if you cooked them past that temp, should be ok!
if the oysters are fresh and cooked then you should be fine as long as they are aten not long after cooking
just be wary of oysters from the supermarket etc, as they would've been previously frozen and defrosted and can be in the cabnet for a couple of days,
personally I won't touch seafood when preg, apart from fish, to much of a risk for me, but like jbie said others eat them like no tomorrow and everything is fine, so its all up to you

Wow I didn't know this and have eaten them the whole pregnancy ( now 30 weeks), they must have been all fresh.
I just thought only deep sea fish was the worst for mercury levels.
it's not mercury she's worried about, it's food poisoning with listeria.
it's just a risks game, either the food's infected or it's not.
yeah there'll come a point where you'll crave all the things you can't have. try to find ways to have em (eg by heating) or you'll go mad.
mercury is a dif matter; you just should restrict your merc intake cos it's not good for you.

I ate oysters and mussels - just not prawns or raw fish. I hate raw oysters and have them kinda like cooked scallops anyway...oh I ate those too. This pregnancy havent cos went to other day and the thought made me ill - which annoying as I love them and they full of lots of good things! I was told if you cooked them or restaurant and they fresh (you can tell if not!) then they are fine. But would agree about being careful about supermarket ones...I was just told by doctor and middies to avoid prawns, smoked salmon, raw fish (sushi) and sword fish, tuna and shark and tinned tuna just once in a while.
