Hello lovely people :D

I am looking for some ideas to fatten the dude up. So far he is really enjoying his mush and will pretty much eat anything. I usually try to mix in some cheese, full fat milk, yoghurt, banana or avocado to whatever he is eating in order to elevate the fat/calorie content.

But they are the only high fat/calorie foods I can think of. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

Oh, the dude is almost 7 months old so it's all mush right now :D

Hi Ali

Have you considered custard?

You can make your own using custard powder, or you could start him off on ready made baby custards such as egg custard.

Hiya :) I don't know about fat content but an easy way to increase the carbs is to use the maggi packet mixes for beef strog... no need to add sour cream, and also we now use the italian mince one as well. People will probably warn you not to use them due to high salt or dangerous whatevers, but my little man, 10 months next week, loves them. Lots of pasta and rice to accompany both meals.... :)

These are a few ideas for increasing fat and calories that we were given when my daughter had failure to thrive. These were given by a peadiatric dietican. Please note that she was a fair bit older at 18 months when this was discussed.

Roast his vegies with olive oil, then puree/mash to consistency using cream (full fat)

Add milk powder to custards to increase calcium

If/when he has started on meats then pan fry

There is a product called polyjoule that you can get from the chemist, but you may wish to discuss this with your Dr first. It has not fat content but it adds calories. It is tasteless - which is great and can either be mixed in liquids or sprinkled on foods. If he is on to water as well you can even add it to water so that he is getting a calorie boost that way.

Add cream to anything and everything, like when you mash the bannas and avocardo.

Make cheese sauce to mix in with his vegies.

You seem to be on the right track already. I'm sorry but my brain drain can't remember anymore. If you are still worried - go and see a dietican. But some kids just end up small. My two younger daughters eat me out of house and home, the middle one especially and they are still small. My youngest is 4 and wights 12kg. A lot of it can be genetic, I am still underweight on all the weight charts but I eat normally.

Good luck.

Coconut milk or cream - yummy and very high in calories and 'good' fat - very good for you. A friend of mine has just started giving it to her 10 month old who is on the light side. She pretty much mixes it in with anything and he loves it.

I don't know if you want to use butter (because of the good fat/bad fat thing) but a thing my grandmother used to do was to mix butter and a little bit of flour with peas and carrots to make them all mushy and buttery and she used to pour melted butter and breadcrumbs onto cauliflower so we'd eat it...I still love veges done this way although I don't do it for the kids...unlike good ol' grandma I'm trying not to 'disguise' vegetables! This was 'back in the day' before we knew about good fat/bad fat though...I wouldn't recommend it every day.
