I recently heard about an accident in a childcare centre where the childcarer was holding a baby ( i don't know how old) bent down to pick up a dummy and dropped the baby. The baby now has to go get catscans or whatever you called due to a fractured skull. Everything looks ok though. I though gees if that was my kid in that daycare and that happened i would want that woman sacked and sued if there ended up being long term probs. I know it was an accident but what do you all think. I don't know the person this is just what i was told.
I think you'd have to be pretty careless for that accident to happen
Hi there,
It would be a really bad situation to be in and im sure the child care worker would be feeling sick to the stomach. I've worked in a child care centre for the past 5 years (on maternity leave) so i know how it would be on both sides.
Accidents do happen in child care centre just like they do in the home. I haven't seen any as bad as that. I know here in qld that any ijuries that are serious get reported to the department of family services who come out to the centre and investigate the incident.

I was a dierector of childcare centre in Brisie and the investigation from DoFamilies is really full on, they look into everything including the staff member - it's not any easy thing to go thru, most staff who are involved seriously consider their own ability to cope and often want to quit cause as Nattie pointed out 13 - 17 dollars an hour isn't worth it
If there has been negligence then the staff member would be relieved on full pay while an investigation is carried out, then she will depending on the outcome be relieved of duties or re-instated, if negligence has occured then the centre and centre's director can be sued, thats why all centre's have huge public liability insurances, centre's will never offer to pay for treatment because this is seen as an omission of guilt by courts so their hands are tied
The poor parents - they can of course complain to DoF's and will recieve a written response to their complaint, every occasion is investigated and multiple cases over a period of time may cause DoF's to make alot of spot checks and worst case senario shut the centre down!!!

Sorry ok maybe i wouldn't sue but i know i would be so bloody furious, i mean you place your child in trusting arms, i know accidents happen but its usually out of carelisness. No i don't know the all the details but hearing it made me so sad and mad, all i could think of was that poor family:(

I have worked in the Child Care Industry for over 10 years and usually when things like this happen the worker feels really guilty and sick to their stomach. From what I could gather from your post it sound like an accident. I know I would feel guilty as if this happened to me, but it didin't. But I really feel for the parents of the baby:( I hope that everything is OK.
Sounds like a plain old accident to me.
Yup.
I'd be a little upset, but it's something that I, easily, could do myself. Of course you'd be sad and a little angry that your bub was hurt, but accidents happen, and that one wasn't one that had huge risk factors.

If there were long term effects from the "plain old accident" would the center cover the doctors/surgery/etc bills for that child.. I don't just mean the immediate ambulance/scan fee's but any other medical costs inncurred by the parents related to the accident?? Just wondering..
I feel sorry for everyone involved. Hope the child recovers with no lasting effects..

Oh that's really sad. I feel for the parents the baby and the care giver. What a horrible accident to happen, but could have easily happened at home too. I am sure that incident has totally effected every part of that care givers life and she will find it very hard to recover.
I hope it all works out fine.
