View Full Version : diabetes in children
hi all .. just wondering .. what are the symptoms of diabetes in children??
does anyone out there have a diabetic child? How was it diagnosed??
I"m a paranoid freak of a mother (working in special ed doesn't help!! I"m constantly aware of syndromes ..) ..
Jack constantly drinks .. and pees ALL day (today - in an hour .. he did at least four - if not five wees ... ) I will admit .. that he DOES love the potty (and the rewards he gets for using it) - so he has motivation to pee .. what other indicators are there??

Juvenile Diabetes Symptoms
The process that destroys the insulin-producing beta cells can be a long and insidious one. At the point when insulin production bottoms out, however, type 1 diabetes usually appears suddenly and progresses quickly. Warning signs of type 1 diabetes include:
Frequent urination (in children, a recurrence of bed-wetting after toilet training has been completed).
Unusual thirst, especially for sweet, cold drinks.
Extreme hunger.
Sudden, sometimes dramatic, weight loss.
Weakness.
Extreme fatigue.
Blurred vision or other changes in eyesight.
Irritability.
Nausea and vomiting (acute symptoms).
Children with type 1 diabetes may also be restless, apathetic, and have trouble functioning at school. In severe cases, diabetic coma may be the first sign of type 1 diabetes
Diabetes Symptoms in Child
Parents of a child with "classic" symptoms of diabetes may notice that their son or daughter is abnormally thirsty, needs to urinate frequently, and has been losing weight in spite of a good appetite. But this is only one possible set of symptoms. Sometimes, the first sign of diabetes is bed-wetting in a child who has always been dry at night. Other times, in girls, it's a vaginal "yeast" infection (candida infection). About 25% of children have already progressed to diabetic ketoacidosis by the time they first see the doctor. Because these children may vomit and complain of abdominal pain, their symptoms can be mistaken for the flu or appendicitis. In the most severe cases, the child breathes rapidly and deeply, has a fruity odor on his breath, and may lose consciousness.
Doctors diagnose diabetes by testing for glucose and ketones in the urine and by measuring glucose levels in the blood.
Unusual thirst, especially for sweet, cold drinks.
he drinks HEAPS - but he always has (porky baby)
Extreme hunger.

Extreme fatigue.

Blurred vision or other changes in eyesight.

Irritability.

If your concerned just take him to the Dr it will take only a little bit of your time to find out all he will do is get him to wee in a jar and then take 1 drop of blood from a finger thats it you will find out straigh away..
Hope that helps we get so many kids in now with diabetes it isn't funny so if you think it could be there go get it checked out better now that later if it is there..

Jen, I second the suggestion of having his Blood Glucose Levels checked next time you are at the GP. It's easy and simple- a urine sample will give more details but checking BSLs is a start.
I too am totally paranoid about Type 1 Diabetes developing in my children, so I totally understand how you feel :hugs: You're not crazy hun :D We are especially concerned as we have recently gone through DH's sudden onset of Type 1, when he became suddenly very ill, far from home and medical help. He is injecting 4 times a day and checks his BSL's 4-6 times daily.
We have checked Ronan's BSLs at one stage, when he was so irritable, tired and thirsty all the time for a few weeks. His levels were ok but I'm so glad we checked as they have a 5-10% chance of developing the disease due to the hereditary link.
