I didn't have it done for either of my two previous pregnancies. I'm 36 now so I'm sure there will be a push to get it done. Probably will - but only to see bub and get good idea of due date. Will see - we're only just 6 weeks so I have some time to decide.

Yep, getting mine done on the 24th of Sept. By my OB who is about to get his own machine.
The last one I had cost me $141 but I'm sure I got about $60 back from Medicare. I had to pay for it in tears as I'd just found out my baby was dead :crying:

Yes, i will definitely be having it done, and this has just reminded me I need to book it.
God, pregnancy brain has really taken over. I was ment to da that about 2 weeks ago!!!
Yes, mine is booked in for 19 th September - 12 weeks 4 days - the best time to do it apparently.
I had the screenings done with my last pregnancy and came back with a really high risk for downs. Had CVS done, but results were all perfect. Being 39 this time around, puts a bit more pressure on to have them done. But I agree with most of you, its nice to have the ultrasound pix!

Ok girls... especially those at Redlands... I am faxing my referral off tomorrow when I go to the post office....
How do I go about organising my NT scan with the Redlands mob??.... Do I do it through them... or do I just see my GP and get a referral from him??... as isn't the first time Redlands see you 12 weeks??... which is when the scan needs to be done??...

They don't do ultrasounds at Redlands and they don't give you referrals so you will need to organise that yourself.
You won't get in until you are pat 12 weeks now I don't think but get the NT scan done at 12 weeks and take the results along to your first appointment. :)

Ok thanks Leesh!!! Looks like I am off to see my GP then!!...
So what happens with the 20 week ultrasound... do I have to go see my GP for that too?... Get in and book early!!!

03-09-2007, 03:27 PM
Yeah you have to book your 20 week appointment at the GP too and then take those results along to the hospital at your following appointment.
Word of warning... The Midwives don't like you referring to your baby as he or she it's always 'baby' :p

Hi

Mine is costing $190 and my last one was $150 so I guess the price varies.
My scan just gone was $131 and i got $51 back from medicare... i dont know how much the NT scan is, but it seems $250 is pretty high? Depends where you live too i guess

I just called Medicare back and they said that some can claim, some can't it all depends on the provider that you go to and how they itemise your bill (i.e what item number etc)
Very strange! :detective:

Can I ask what a Nuchal Transluchancy Scan is?..., whats different to a normal scan ?
Noah_and_Elijah
04-09-2007, 09:52 AM
An NT scan checks for down syndrome and how at risk the baby is of developing it...

They take bloods and measure something on the back of bubs neck in a scan to work out the chance of a couple of disorders like spina bifida...
They then assess if and you you a probability of your baby having it!!
Noah_and_Elijah
04-09-2007, 09:56 AM
It only tests for Down Syndrome. The nuchal translucency scan at 11-13 weeks is too early to diagnose many other abnormalities, so another scan is usually recommended at 18-19 weeks. The later scan will specifically look for evidence of spina bifida and other neural tube defects, as well as cardiac defects.

AHH!!! sorry I meant to write Down Syndrome... I have no idea why I wrote spina bifida... lol sorry!!!...
probably cause I had to write it down so many times when I was getting the scan done as my dad has it!!!

I'm not having another scan till the 20 week one. I had a dating one at 7 weeks so saw the heartbeat.
They make so many women worry about having a child with Downs when most of the time there is nothing wrong and even if there was there is nothing we could do about it, we would never terminate so I would rather not spend my whole pregnancy stressing out. I know quite a few women who were told they were high risk for Downs and there was nothing wrong, Then you have to decide wether to have further invasive tests done that increase risk of miscarriage, nope, too much for me! Just how I feel though and I certainly understand why people want to see their bubbas!! I have to wait till November to see my little one again.
I can't believe how much people pay for scans! My first one at 7 weeks was bulk billed much to my surprise, and with DS I only had one at 20 weeks and once I got money back from Medicare I think it only cost about $20.

I wouldn't terminate either. I am only getting it done so that I get a photo for the baby book!

sorry if that came across like I thought anyone would terminate! I know most people would never dream of it, I just meant that is why I would rather not know if anything was wrong, but definitely understand why people have a scan to see their bubbas!!!

I had my scan done yesterday and the place totally bulk bills everyone no matter if you are on a pension or working. Have to go back for another one in 2 weeks though coz bubs isn't coooperating with dates. Sposed to be 12 weeks but scan showed yesterday I was only 10.5. At least I saw the heartbeat and bubs was moving round too.
