View Full Version : Runaway Toddler!!
:o My nearly 2 yr old runs away from me constantly, he thinks it is hilarious and im suprised i dont have a head of white hair the amounts of time he has disappeared in the shops, nearly run on the road etc, i cant even pay for something without him running off. as soon as that pram stops(or even slows down) he is out of there! it doesnt help that he is also a jnr houdini and tightening his pram straps etc doesnt even slow him down. i have tried a harness but he refuses to walk when i put it on his wrist, he just sits down and refuses to move, as if to say"im not being seen out in public with this thing on!' can someone please help? i had some business to attend to at my older sons school today and it turned into a nightmare because cooper keeps running away(and climbing, but thats another story!) it is even worse now because i have matilda as well and i cant just leave her to chase him. its driving me crazy!!! (i dont know why im not super slim with all the running i do :) )

Oh dear, I have that problem too! Not to your extent by the sounds of it, but it's hard when you've got a new bubba plus a wayward toddler! Aidan often thinks it's a game, so I don't laugh when I go get him, and I don't chase him like it's fun. But other than that, I'm no help whatsoever! I have lots of empathy for you though!
omg quick update, i waited till my older son was home and then put a movie on for him and cooper and hoped on the computer(slack i know but its the raining and the babies asleep and i thought oh why not) anyway i hear the front gate open and i htink a friend of thomas's has arrived but i wait a min and hear no knock at the door, then i hear cooper calling for his brother, it sounds like its coming from outside! so i run into the loungeroom, thomas is in the kitchen getting a drink 'where is cooper?' 'i dont know' race outside and here is cooper he has gone out the gate and is walking along our quite high brick fence and when i tell him off he just does a little dance and laughs! i musnt have shut the big door properly, i feel sick thinking what would have happened if he hadnt called out! he is in his cot now having some time out(for some reason that is the one place he never tries to escape from!) :o he is sooo cute though, so it makes it hard to get cranky at him, he has these beautiful long blonde curls that frame his face and the most cherubic little face and the funniest little personality hes 'the devil in disguise!'

I soooo understand what you are going through! I have a lil 2 and a half year old matt shirvington on my hands here too. Yesterday we went to the pools with my sis and her 6 month old and as we were getting out of the baby pool Jake took off like a flash and ran straight for the deep end of the adult pool! I yelled his name about ten times but he just ignored me and kept going. (and yes i had his ears check last fornight for this very reason and his hearing is fine) Luckily one of the life guards grabbed him first as i still didnt reach him witth me going full pelt!! I was sooo angry and scared (he didnt have his floaties on as we had gotten out of the pool) I gave him a whopping smack. I was sooooo scared. I had nightmares all last night of his floating body in a pool.
So if anyone has any other suggestions i would love to hear them too!
Hey all, sorry to hear this drama im lucky enough that i havent experienced it in quite awhile but may still have some ideas, may work may not but ill let ya know anyway lol. With the harness have u tried putting it on him and then strapping it to the pram so he cant go to far from the pram?? i myself would try bribing my kids if that happend but some ppl dont agree. I know when Aaliyah started to walk and she wanted to run away i "staged" a kidnap. I got a friend of mine that she didnt see alot and when she got up the first time i explained to her that she couldnt run away cos someone may take her and she would never see mummy and daddy again. Of course she didnt listen so the next time she got out of her pram i told her i would leave her and walked away while my friend was standing near by. as soon as i got out of site my friend picked her up and started to walk away with her, Aaliyah screamed blue murder until i went up to her but it worked. she has never gotten out of the pram again and now she is walking all the time she never runs away, she always holds onto the side of bubbys pram. This may not work for u but it did us, some times u have to b cruel to b kind.I hope it can help in some way if not Good Luck with it :)

Hi ladies, i too have a runaway toddler. here's the story of the worst time ...
on xmas eve, we went to visit a friend to wish her for xmas. hubby, our friend and i were sitting in the lounge room chatting while isabella (2 1/2 at the time) played in the sunroom at the front of the house. after a while, it was just a bit too quiet so i went to check on her - of course she wasn't there and my blood ran cold. i wasn't fully panicking yet and i checked the bedroom - no bella. then i started calling out her name and looked out the front door. still couldn't see her. by now i was terrified and i ran down the front stairs and searched the front yard and side of the house. then hubby said he saw her. i looked up and saw her ACROSS THE ROAD  so at 8 1/2 months pregnant, i bolted across the road (without looking for traffic) and picked her up. the girl who was with her was about 10 ish and she seemed really sorry, saying that bella just came up and started talking to them. i said it was ok and ran back across the street with bella and hubby took her from me and i just started crying so uncontrollably. our friend took me upstairs while hubby had a talk to bella. hours later, i was still crying, feeling so guilty. the sheer terror that struck me when i saw her across the road is something that i will never ever forget.
sneaky little bugger, i'll never let her out of my sight again

Have you tried the 2in1 harness buddys (I think thats what they're called). You can get monkey ones that look like a backpack and then you hold onto the monkeys tail.

I'm going to close this thread as it's more than 2 years old and I think Coops has sorted her issues with her son by now ! :)
