I'm just testing this facility out to see if we can use it to start some juicy polls from our viewers!
To see how it works, here is a basic poll...

Breastfed till 3 weeks, then bottle AND breast until 9 weeks... then ran out of milk.
One of the most stupid things I ever did was switch to bottle far too early.

Not especially - polls can still go in the section to which they are relevant - I was just setting this up for some general polls in a prominent position on the site that most viewers would see and we could get really good feedback on.

I was the same although I tried for about 2 weeks with both my DS and DD until I started to lose my mental health worrying why they constantly cried, didn't have wet nappies, lost weight, etc etc etc.:crying: I still can't help but think that I gave up to easily, could have tried harder. Oh well! they're both happy and healthy now so that's the main thing.:)

I only breastfed for 4 days but not really by choice. It was a mixture of things- traumatic labour, big hungry baby who wouldn't latch on, cracked bleeding nipples, start of mastitis... the list goes on. I very much regret giving up so early, I would still be BF now if I could be.

Hey there!
I only was able to breastfeed for about 5 1/2 months before I gave up fighting with my little man (he hated BF from the beginning but I kept going until even the doctor suggested I try formula). While not my ideal situation I was given a chance to see both sides of the coin. BF is very hard work for some (easy for others) but I really commend the women that keep it up for as long as they can. I applaude women who formula feed as well though as I too know the pressures of not BF.

i bottle fed from day 3 onwards....unfortunantly i wasnt producing enough milk... hopefully things go alright with no#2:(
I BF my DD for 15 months, then found out I was pregnant again and only making colostrum so I weaned her. I hope to go just as long with this baby. VERY hard at first, but after 3 months no probs at all.

I breastfed and comp fed DS1 till he was 6 weeks old then he went to bottle fed only. With DS2 I only breastfed for 3 days and after many tears he went onto bottle fed only.
Unfortunately I never had enough supply for both my boys. They were never settled until they went onto formula, so I know I did the right thing at the end.

It's interesting that it's very close with percentages. I'd like to know how many fed past 2 though as it only goes up to more than 12 months. I fed to around 2 and a half. She weaned at 2 years and 5 months so I felt ripped off by a month of what I was aiming for :crying:

DD is almost 6 months and still breastfeeding. I put my success down to asking for a lot of help in the early days.
DD1 was BF for 12mths, I could have fed her longer but she just kept waking up @ nites for comfort feed and I wasnt getting any sleep. Although I did miss it and regreted stopping too soon.
DD2 is almost 3 weeks old and being bf. I'm aiming for longer this time. I have so much milk atm I'm considering donating to a milk bank.

My first 9lb15oz emergency caesarian son was on bottle after 1 week. Not enough milk,(apparently he would have prefered a steak!)
My second 9lb4oz VBAC son was also not getting enough milk. However, armed with knowledge, I have been able to continue breastfeeding with top ups of formula.
We all know "breast is best", (as it is so often drummed into us!), but people should spare a thought for those women who try hard to breastfeed and it just doesn't work out. I know I felt so down on myself when I had to put my first on the bottle and I felt guilty that I wasn't doing the best thing for him. It took me many months to realise that I wasn't a failure at all and what do you know? I have two beautiful, healthy, happy little boys.:smiliedance: :smiliedance:

I breastfed my first son for eight months with complementary bottle feeds because I was working.
My first DD was breastfed for nearly two years.
I actually tandem fed Maverick and Harrison because Maverick did not want to wean after Harrison was born. It was not good for Maverick's teeth though to breastfeed until he was four.
Harrison was nearly three when he was weaned.
Samantha is eighteen months and still breastfeeding.

With my first I bottle fed from day 1!
With the twins I tried to breastfeed both but Charlee was not intersted at all so she was bottle fed from about day3. Caden however loved the boob, but I only lasted 7wks full and another two BF/FF and fully bottle fed from 9wks. It was just too much for me with one to get to and fro school and twins.
With this one I planning on breastfeeding for as long as I can, but no longer then 12mths. Will see how we go!

My DS1 was only breastfed for about 5 days and I couldn't handle the pressure from everyone around me, always adding there two cents.
Before DS2 arrived I decided that I would give 100% to breastfeeding and ignore the negative attitudes from family and friends. It was the best thing I could have done for my sanity. I loved it....my baby loved it. At times I had to focus all of my positive thoughts to keep my milk flowing...and I managed to breastfeed for 5 months before going back to work full time.
We are TTC#3 at the moment...and I plan to breastfeed until the baby is ready to wean.

It's a bit sad when I read the posts where women felt they had to FF from day 1 or day 2 or day 3 due to not enough milk :(
I'm sad that the hospital staff were not informed enough to know or to communicate to the mother that the milk doesn't actually "come in" until around day 3 or 4, longer for a c-section delivery. I'm just not sure how many people were aware of that, and annoyed that medical professionals don't know anything about feeding babies! It goes both ways though so don't get me wrong, I know a lady who's baby weighed less at 2 weeks than she did at birth but the doctors were saying so long as she is on the boob whenever she wants it she'll grow. The baby ended up hospitalised due to dehydration and was literally starving! I just think doctors and other "professionals" need to be more educated and also need to look at each individual case and each child and not just give general information based on the limited knowlege they have of baby feeding.

:hugs: You did exactly what you thought was the best thing for your baby and you can only do what you believe to be right at the time. I introduced solids to my daughter at 11 weeks because I was following her lead and didn't know to hold off. It doesn't make us bad mums it just means that people give out bad advice who should know better and mums follow it to do what's best for their babies. We only do our best but if we don't have the right information it makes it more difficult to do the already difficult job of parenting. :shame: Doctors need to really think about what they're doing, and as for CHN's they have an even more important job to do, as so many people see them about their baby's health, they really need to do the research and not treat everyone like some text book but rather look at each child and give out information helpful to that family. Good luck with the continuing job of parenthood :sunshine:

Sorry I wasn't quite clear enough. Em was hospitalised with Faliure to thrive, which means she was dehydrated and malnourished. my milk had come in and I was feeding correctly according to the LC, bt she just couldn't BF. It was very hard to make the decision to put her on the bottle with AM in it but with 2 under 2 I did not have the time or energy to express feed her.

Hi all,
I breast fed my first son only for 6 weeks trying to juggle bottles and breast, due to lack of information and support, not knowing he had a jaw weakness(would attach but stop sucking after 3 sucks) and that he was lactose intolerent. Finally after 8 months of screaming, weight loss, sleepless nights constipation or diaoreah and power chucking a doctor put him on soy formula, I had a new baby- he was so satisfied and had no more tummy issues.
DD was totally different, we had her whisked off to special care after birth due to her having done a poo in utero so BF was not immediate. I was furious when a nurse from special care came to me an hour later and said..bub is hungry now, do you want us to give her a bottle?! All over her chart, wristband and cot was BREASTFEED ONLY. Any way she fed happily until 12 months then just stopped on her own.
DS is still happily BF, not looking like stopping now and will be 2 next Monday.
Every bub is different and I agree that medical professionals need to make that assesment and give the correct support and advice for each individual case.

I think it would be interesting to do a poll on why mothers gave up or were unable to breastfeed I bottle fed both of my two from 2 weeks as my milk came in to fast and ran out just as quick the doctors even prescribed me metillium tablets which did not do a thing.
