My 7 week old daughter hasn't done a poo in 5 days but is giving us plenty of wet nappies and smelly farts...not sure if this is ok and at what point (how many days) you would class her as being constipated? She's primarily breastfed but sometimes i do give her a top up of formula if i haven't got enough.

but yesterday when i was changing her nappy, i noticed clear jelly-like bits in her nappy....there were only a few bits but it must have come from her because i wiped her clean and changed her nappy and later found more again? Does anyone know what this is or if i should be worried???

At 5 days now, id probably go for a trip to the Dr. as it sounds like she could be constipated, i know b/fed bubs can go about 3 days or so. Also if you can try b/feeding her more often, that way she'll increase your supply and you can eventually drop the formula top up's off altogether, if that's what you want. HTH:)

Breastfed babies can go up to 14 days without poo so i would not be to concerned unless she seems uncomfy, jelly crystals are in disposables they are said to be harmless. HTH:D

They can go much longer actually.. 10-14 days is totally normal so long as they are still getting wet nappies..

To avoid the crystals simply change her nappy more frequently..

Hi, the jelly bits are from the disposable nappies and are harmless.

Re baby not pooing - we have experience in this department as our bub (when she was 3 months) didn't poo for 31 days and had to go to hospital as she was totally blocked up.

The ECHNs kept telling me it was normal but believe me, 31 days is NOT normal. We were told by the head paedeatric surgeon at the Westmead Children's Hospital that 10 days is normal for a fully BF baby to go without a poo. If at 14 days they still haven't gone, take them to the doctor.

Our baby was suspected to have Hirschsprung's Disease - part of the bowel doesn't work - but thank god she didn't. Once solids were introduced she started pooing regularly.

Not trying to alarm you but just giving everyone the heads up on not pooing. The surgeon mentioned that some people take it too lightly but it can actually make them really sick if they're not passing their waste as they should.

Hope this helps.

ok, only going off what i have read in the past.

Personally I would be getting worried after 4-5 days if my babies hadn't done a poo, even if 10-14 is said to be ok, i just don't see how that can be normal, maybe allowable to let it go that long but not normal. JMO :) Im so used to my bubs going everday day, at least twice.

Dont worry about the jelly bits chicky, like the others have said they are just from the disposables, i find that certain brands do it more so than others.
I have never had it from Huggies, but a GF gave me a heap of Baby Love and it happens with those.
So either change more often, or try another brand if it continually happens.

Also i had head up to 10 days without a poo for a BF baby is normal. If YOU are worried head to your GP, hey us mummies know when something isnt right with bub, so trust your instincts.

You are lucky... almost EVERY nappy change is a pooey one for me. I would be lucky to get two in a day that are just wet.

Just a few pieces of information for you..

They may become less frequent, varying greatly from a stool each feed, to once every ten days.

Frequency: Can vary from every feed to once per week.

The bowel motions of a breastfed baby seldom need cause concern. The numbers can vary tremendously - from once a week to one before and after each feed. All are perfectly normal for a healthy baby.

I was also told that up to 10 days w/o a poo is fine for a breast fed baby. How I loved those weeks with no dirty nappies :D:D:D

Bliss...

And then we started solids - ewwww

When I had DS nearly 7 yrs ago a midwife told me:
Ten times a day, or once every ten days - anything in between is normal.

But definitely if bub seems out of sorts see your GP.

yep, i agree a baby who is breastfed exclusively can have huge variations in how frequently they poo, from nearly every nappy, to once in 10 days.

formula however can cause some babies to get blocked up, so it would be a good idea to just get an opinion froma health care provider.

breasstmilk works on a supply equals demand system, so the more you breastfeed the more milk you will make, there is generally no need for formula top ups in an otherwise healthy baby who has access to the breast whenever they need it.

sometimes to help a bowel motion along (whenever we did hit the 10 day marker) i found that (me) eating something like a few dried apricots, or paw paw seemed to then help my breastfed baby along too, this could be an old wives tale, but i always found it helped:o

I've found that with disposables is you leave them to get overly wet the lining tends to breakdown and let the little gel beads through.
Also, breastfeed babies can go 10 days with out a poo but be aware, super poo is on it's way!!!!

Agreed it is crystals.

I dunno if I am the only one, but i LOVE when DD does a poo hahaha

She is breastfed and when she poops to me it means she is getting all nurtients from mummy dearest :) I love to feel how heavy the nappy is when she poops..

Am I gross or what? :gloomy:
